Wilfork’s presence aids newcomer Neblett – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN

In fact, free-agent defensive tackle Andre Neblett said Wilfork has played an important role in easing his transition to the team after he signed a one-year deal with a $630,000 base salary on Wednesday. “He was here, in a couple of meetings, sitting in there giving us advice,” Neblett said Friday. “I see we have a lot of young guys on the D-line and it was great for him to come in and help us.”

Shades of development for Aaron Dobson – Extra Points – Boston.com

Shades of development for Aaron Dobson – Extra Points – Boston.com

That’s Dobson in a nutshell. He’s shown all the flash and pizazz of a big-time receiver, who certainly has more to show and room to grow, but has somehow been disrupted either by the dynamic play of others or his own doing. Through more than a quarter of the season, he has been inconsistent, catching 13 passes on 29 targets for 167 yards and a touchdown and recording three drops. He has had trouble being on the same page with Brady, running the wrong routes on occasion. Brady has thrown two of his three interceptions when throwing in Dobson’s direction. He’s projected to catch 36 passes for 460 yards and three touchdowns this season.

Diagnosing Tom Brady’s struggles: Video, numbers show issues with rookies, accuracy in short area of field | masslive.com

The biggest change from years past to this season is the number of bad passes that Brady has thrown this season, which are defined for practical purposes as passes where he missed his mark. In all, 41 of Brady’s 85 incompletions were categorized in this manner. A few completions, such as the aforementioned Amendola play, could also be counted as bad passes. It will not surprise critics of rookies Kenbell Thompkins (13) and Aaron Dobson (10) were Brady’s targets on more than half of his bad passes, while Julian Edelman (eight) and Danny Amendola (four) are next of the list.

On any typical non-pressure, man-to-man defense, it’s a simple math proposition: there are five eligible pass catchers on the field and seven pass defenders (assuming a typical four-man rush), meaning you have two “help” chess pieces available. You can use the two extra defenders as zone players in the deep halves of the secondary; everyone else plays man-to-man with no low help. Another option is using one deep, middle-of-the-field safety, affording the defense one underneath coverage “help” zone player (the “rat”). Alternatively, the help player can be used to specifically double one receiver, while still keeping a deep middle of the field safety — but then the zone helper is gone.

All of this led to the decision this week to bring in noted orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews to sign off on whether Gronkowski is indeed ready to play, taking the decision out of the hands of the Patriots, Gronkowski and Dr. Gill.

Wow, let’s hope we get our Gronk back.
