52.5 yards per game. The difference in passing yards allowed through nine games in 2012 vs. nine games in 2013. The Patriots preach team defense more than just about anyone, but it’s hard not to look at the this year’s pass defense numbers against last season and not credit the work of the secondary. Through nine games in 2013, the Patriots have yielded an average of 232.8 passing yards per game (13th in the league). Through nine games last year, New England was allowing an average of 285.3 passing yards per game (29th in the NFL).

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Week 8 DVOA Ratings

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Week 8 DVOA Ratings

Lots of Pats stuff in here, we’ll get into the ratings in another post. Interesting breakdown of Tom Brady’s down season as well.

The idea of the Patriots as the most consistent team in the league seems ridiculous, because they seem so inconsistent from drive to drive. Nonetheless, the Patriots may not be the enigma that everyone thinks they are. The Patriots are not suddenly a bad team. They seem to be a slightly above-average team that plays most games slightly above-average. Maybe the reason the Patriots are so hard for people to judge is that their performance this year is so different from what we’ve come to expect from the Patriots in recent years. Their defense ranks sixth in DVOA and has been the most consistent in the league (variance of only 2.0%) despite all the injuries in recent weeks. The offense, on the other hand is just 20th in offensive DVOA (12th in variance). Even stranger, the offense is being carried in part by the running game. The Patriots rank 12th in rushing DVOA but 24th in passing DVOA.

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: 2013 TEAM EFFICIENCY RATINGS thru Week 7

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: 2013 TEAM EFFICIENCY RATINGS thru Week 7

Latest rankings are out and I feel like I don’t even know who these Patriots are anymore. A top-10 defense!? And bottom half offense!? What the hoodie?

Overall: 12th

Offense: 19th (21st pass, 13th rush)

Defense: 8th (5th pass, 21st rush)

  • vs. #1 WR: 6th
  • vs. #2 WR: 32nd
  • vs. Other WR: 5th
  • vs. TE: 4th
  • vs. RB: 6th

Special Team: 1st (!!!!)

These rankings are pretty interesting to me. How are you top-10 covering everyone except #2 WRs who are torching you worse than anyone? I don’ think Dennard has been that bad, though I’m sure Arrington has factored into those ratings as well.

Also worth pointing out that while the Pats’ run defense has been okay without Wilfork and Kelly, when you look at these kinds of rankings they’re not doing so hot. While the Jets didn’t tear up the stat sheet with their yards-per-carry, they consistently won the down when they ran.

As for the special teams, bravo! Gostkowski is having a Pro Bowl year, and Ryan Allen is really starting to show why they kept him over Zoltan Mesko.

Think there’s any chance Cordarelle Patterson would be a good fit for the Patriots’ offense, if he happened to fall that far?

Absolutely. He fits the profile of the kind of receiver they’ve lacked, and brings return ability. Coaches also “rave about his football intelligence”. But yeah, assuming he’s long gone by the time it’s the Pats turn to pick.
