offense

January 16, 2014 by Mike Dussault

People always ask me, what’s the difference between today’s Patriots and when we faced them in 2007, when they had the most explosive offense until this year’s Denver Broncos,” former New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce told ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic on Wednesday. “They had no running game. We didn’t fear their running game. We dared them to try and run the football on us. But you imagine Tom Brady with a 245-, 250-pound back running downhill? That’s dangerous. You give that kind of quarterback a two-way option … when they had the most success in [Brady’s] career as a Patriot — I’m talking about winning championships — it was all about the running game. You remember Corey Dillon. That big back, that factor where when he drops into play-action and throws the ball over the top … now, you’re saying, ‘Wow — how difficult is this? What do we do?

The Patriots outscored the high-powered Broncos over the second half of the season by a 265-263 count. And a New England team that was 24th in scoring through the first month of the season (an average of 19 points per game through four contests) ended up tied for second in the league with 27.8 points per game, trailing only the 37.9 points per game put up by Denver

Despite getting rid of the ball in and average of 2.39 seconds per pass attempt during the regular season, Brady was sacked 40 times, one shy of his career high set in his first year as a starter in 2001. Last season, Brady took an average of 2.42 seconds per attempt and was sacked 27 times.

In their last three games, the New England backs have averaged 168 rushing yards. In addition, the Patriots were 9-1 this season when they ran for 100 or more yards, and 9-0 when they attempted 30 or more rushes in a game.

Patriots’ adjustment in ground game flattened Ravens – Sports – The Boston Globe

Patriots’ adjustment in ground game flattened Ravens – Sports – The Boston Globe

Just an all-around impressive day in the run game, especially for Mankins, Kline, and Wendell, who helped the Patriots rush for 70 yards on 15 carries to the left side (4.7-yard average). Blount and Ridley were equally impressive in running through traffic. Of Ridley’s 54 yards rushing, 31 came after contact, an encouraging stat for someone working on his ball security. And we counted 26 yards after contact for Blount, who had 76 yards total. Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain and safety James Ihedigbo each missed a couple of tackles.

New England has been fast this year, just not as fast as previous editions. In 2011, the Patriots ran 242 of their 1,082 plays out of no-huddle sets. In 2012, they went without a huddle on 294 of 1,191 plays. This season, they’ve gone no-huddle on 119 of 1,008 plays, by far the lowest percentage of the last three seasons.

Interesting article from Nick Underhill. We had to know they’d slow down without the versatile and experienced crew that they had the last few seasons. Maybe things can start to pick up a bit here at the end of the season.

Why is Tom Brady taking a beating? Breaking down where the New England Patriots are lacking in protecting their QB | masslive.com

Why is Tom Brady taking a beating? Breaking down where the New England Patriots are lacking in protecting their QB | masslive.com

Really great stuff from Nick Underhill, putting some hard numbers to the sacks this season.

A faster trigger would likely deter some of the sacks, but this aspect of the offense isn’t the chief culprit in this dilemma. After reviewing the 26 sacks, it appears that seven were the result of quality coverage from the defense and two were the result of Brady’s indecisiveness. The rest were either the result of a blitz or the result of spotty play by the offensive line. So, to a degree, Belichick is correct in his assessment that the letdowns can be traced back to all elements of the offense. But while facing a bunch of quality pass-rushing teams hasn’t helped, it appears Mankins was closer to the mark when stating that the offensive line needs to become more consistent.
