Jeff Fisher quickly redefining St. Louis Rams; 10 quick thoughts – NFL.com

Dan Koppen will return to Foxborough this weekend as a member of the Denver Broncos. Koppen’s immense knowledge of the New England Patriots’ pass-protection system and calls at the line of scrimmage will force the Pats to make many changes to their audible system. New England must make sure communication is sound. As for Koppen, he has to prove he can still be an effective player; as much as he knows about the Pats, the Pats also know him well as a player. Expect a big defensive lineman to be over Koppen all game.

One punt then six touchdowns to ice this one in the second half. Credit to whatever the coaches did at half time to adjust.

Tom Brady had 4:01 left with just a 30-28 lead, so this was going to be a crucial execution of the four-minute offense. We have seen teams like Dallas, Atlanta and Houston really put games away (against the Manning brothers this year, specifically) in this moment. While the Patriots like to pass in these situations, Brady’s success is not up to par. In the final four minutes of the fourth quarter with a one-score lead, Brady is just 31 of 58 for 328 yards, interception and a 63.0 passer rating. On third downs only, he is 15 of 29 for 176 yards, interception and a 56.1 passer rating.

Captain Comeback Week 3: What the Hell’s Going on Out Here?

Somewhat of a companion piece to what I wrote earlier today about the defense. No question Brady and the offense didn’t do them any favors in those games either. Still, you can’t go 0-for-4 on defense when a stop equals a win.

Although it’s the same offensive system in many ways, Patriots players have pointed out that there are some noticeable differences now that Josh McDaniels is running the offense. One of the big points of emphasis so far has been the running game. The Patriots have 63 rushes through two games, compared to 47 through two games last season. Some of that is game-plan specific, but even going back to the start of training camp, the focus on the running game has been noticeable to players.

Bruschi’s Breakdown: Despite shaky QB, Cardinals a threat to Patriots – ESPN Boston

Bruschi’s Breakdown: Despite shaky QB, Cardinals a threat to Patriots – ESPN Boston

[The Cardinals] base sets will be in the 3-4 alignment and then in sub situations, they’ll try to confuse you with where the pressure is coming from. Against the Seahawks, they overloaded one side of the offensive line on the right, and then came from the left, with others dropping out. So deciphering the combinations and pressure packages will be important. Tom Brady will use the “molasses” count. That’s when you’re at the line of scrimmage and you give a “Blue 80! Blue 80!” and it looks like you’re about to snap the ball but you stop. Because when the defense hears that, they get to the line of scrimmage and show you where they’re going to be. So it’s a dummy count in a sense. At that point, Brady will point out the “Mike” (middle linebacker) and set the protections, and that’s a way to counter the different looks. And that’s important because the Cardinals will move around and bring combo coverages and aggressive blitzes.
