New England Patriots diversify offense with power running game – NFL.com

New England Patriots diversify offense with power running game – NFL.com

You’re not going to find a better breakdown of the new evolution of Patriots offense than this one, with lots of great screen shots of offensive plays. Must Read!

The Patriots are tormenting opponents with a no-huddle offense that operates at a frenetic pace. Tom Brady routinely fields the snap within 15 seconds of the ball being set by the referee to limit the defense’s ability to substitute, significantly fatiguing the opposition over the course of the drive. This results in defenders losing their will to fight off blocks at the line of scrimmage, leading to huge gains by runners throughout the game.

So the 29 plays, a third of the plays, the best player for the Denver Broncos is on the sideline and New England ran 29 plays for 171 yards – 5.9 yards per play. That’s what the no-huddle does.

This is the exact reason why the Patriots have brought back the running game. You lose to the Giants in the Super Bowl last year. You lose to the Giants in the Super Bowl in 2007, and everyone says, ‘There is no threat of a running game.’ The front-four can just tee off on the offensive line, because they know you’re going to throw it. They’re going to get after Tom Brady because you’re one-dimensional. All that has changed now. They’re running the ball now and this is why. This type of matchup is why. The New York Giants pass rush is why you go back to this. The Seattle Seahawks defense is exactly why you go back to this. The Seahawks are at home, the crowd is going to be noisy, and right now in those meeting rooms the Seahawks’ defensive front is licking its chops that they get to rush Tom Brady. By running the ball, the Patriots can slow down that pass rush and control the pace and tempo. You’ve got Stevan Ridley, you’ve got Brandon Bolden, you’ve got Danny Woodhead – you can counteract their strength. This is what you’ve been working toward, and now let’s see if it works against a strong front four that can get off the ball.

patriots – Why the Patriots won’t run as much no-huddle as usual this Sunday against Seattle – WEEI | Christopher Price

patriots – Why the Patriots won’t run as much no-huddle as usual this Sunday against Seattle – WEEI | Christopher Price

I tend to agree, on the road the Pats should pick their spots more with the no-huddle. More on this in the next couple of days but I’d bet we’ll see more normal spread offense this week.

[W]hen the Patriots take their road show to Seattle this Sunday for a date with the Seahawks, they might not be so inclined to go hurry-up. One reason why it seems unlikely that they’ll utilize the no-huddle this weekend against the Seahawks in Seattle is that they use it less on the road than at home. Since the start of the 2011 season, the Patriots’ have pronounced home/road splits when it comes to using the no-huddle: at home, they’ve used it on 32 percent of the snaps, while on the road, that number drops to 22 percent.

While the 2007 team averaged 411.3 yards per game, through five games, the 2012 team is averaging 439.4 yards per game. This year’s team is far better at running the ball than their 2007 counterparts (115.6 yards per game to 165.4 yards per game), and while they don’t have the passing stats to match the 2007 team (295.7 yards per game five years ago vs. 274 through five games this year), they can nearly boast the same ridiculous points per game total (36.8 in 2007, 33 this year).

Patriots no-huddle relies on power of one – Sports – The Boston Globe

I try not to throw the “must reads” around lightly here, but this one certainly qualifies. Fascinating insight into the no-huddle the Pats are using or as I call it “The Blizkrieg”.

Patriots offensive drive charts vs. Broncos

Yes the offense looked pretty unstoppable at times but those three possessions in crunch time (Punt, Downs, Fumble) are disturbing. They must get better at closing teams out.
