Tom Brady, Patriots’ offense built to adapt

Tom Brady, Patriots’ offense built to adapt

One of those great reads that really gives insight into what makes the Patriots offense with Brady so special. What would fans rather have? Sitting on the “Belichick can’t draft WRs” line or running an offense that is near impossible to stop once it’s going. Loved the line about Edelman “getting it” because he was a college quarterback. The search for more weapons will continue this offseason.

That concept is one that has dominated the Patriots offense for years. It’s what has made the Patriots offensive system less Erhardt-Perkins and more West Coast over the years. Yes, they’re still running an Erhardt-Perkins offense because they still subscribe to the concept of using similar play design from different formations.

At the same time, they’ve done this while engineering a high-efficiency pass attack that’s all but eliminated low-percentage throws from the playbook. Sure, Brady will still throw the odd back-shoulder sideline pass (more so now that LaFell has made his return) and he’ll still look for tight end Rob Gronkowski on end-zone fades, but mostly, Brady’s mastery can be attributed to lethal accuracy.

Really good analysis from Andy Benoit breaking down some of the specifics of how the Pats are adjusting to gameplans that are well-designed to stop what they do best.

Patriots’ offensive success fueled by deft play, clever schemes

Patriots’ offensive success fueled by deft play, clever schemes

Very fun read if you like how dominant the Patriots offense has been through the first four games. Dallas got the first part of the test right against them, but didn’t have enough of a second-half change-up to put the Pats back on their toes. Brady will figure out what you’re doing, you’ve got to have a third quarter gameplan that is unique. But I still think the primary principals are press man coverage while only rushing three (but consistently disguising which three). Take away the quick passing game, even if it means giving Brady more time in the pocket.

The New England Patriots Wham Schemes – Inside The Pylon

Good X-and-O read with some insight into the blocking schemes in the running game and then how they use those looks to open up the play action game.

The way the Patriots are playing right now, using shotgun empty with five targets spread wide across the field to jump on opponents early, the only way to slow them down is to play press man and hope to disrupt their timing with three cornerbacks and two safety/linebacker types, and getting home with a four-man rush. But how many teams can actually do that? Not many. The Broncos, Jets and Packers come to mind. Certainly not the Jaguars, the Pats’ opponent on Sunday.

Specifically, the Patriots have gotten off to a hot start in the red zone. Brady’s offense has scored touchdowns on seven of its first nine trips inside the opposition 20-yard line, tying the Pats with the Steelers (7-for-8) and the Cardinals (7-for-7) for the most successful red zone possessions in football.

They’ve pulled this off by introducing yet another subtle wrinkle to their offense, a jumbo package that includes as many as four tight ends with the same telltale pre-snap motion. It’s designed to create matchup nightmares for the opposition, leaving Brady with easy throws against overwhelmed defenders. And each time the Patriots have shown it through two weeks, they’ve taken a markedly similar motion and followed it up with a different look. Run through those five plays and you see how tough it can be to stop the Patriots near the goal line.

Nice job showing GIFs of the four times they used this in here. Did anyone not see this coming this offseason? Now if Chandler can just hold on to the ball.
