“We had a situation when he was a senior where we lost our quarterback for the first three games, and we put him at quarterback. Turns out he could do everything our quarterback could do,” said Oliver. “He had a lot of talent, but his real upside is that he was always a bigger kid. He just stepped in perfectly – he could run the ball, he could throw the ball, and he was just a great athlete. Six-feet tall with blazing speed in high school – that’s the type of kid you want around.
“There were no incidents with him in high school. He was always at practice – just a great kid. He did all the things you want your kids to do. He was a model student – in high school, we never had a problem with Brandon. In addition, he was always a big, strong kid – he was six-feet tall and 225 pounds and fast as lightning and quick as a cat as a high schooler. As a high schooler, he looked like a grown man.”

Dan Koppen will return to Foxborough this weekend as a member of the Denver Broncos. Koppen’s immense knowledge of the New England Patriots’ pass-protection system and calls at the line of scrimmage will force the Pats to make many changes to their audible system. New England must make sure communication is sound. As for Koppen, he has to prove he can still be an effective player; as much as he knows about the Pats, the Pats also know him well as a player. Expect a big defensive lineman to be over Koppen all game.
That’s the issue you face against New England. Week 1, Tennessee played nickel on every snap, relatively. Last week, Buffalo played dime, relatively, on every snap. And they did that against the one-back, two-tight end sets, and most times when you line up like that, teams counter with their base defense. Against New England, because teams are more worried about the pass, they line up in nickel or dime. Buffalo is a dime sub-package team. And they got killed, because if you’re a 4-3 base defense and you line up in dime, your two outside linebackers are, in effect, defensive backs.
