I think this year the offense will use more 3WR and 1TE sets and occasionally use multiple TE sets. What do you think the offense will look like this year?

August 29, 2013 by Mike Dussault

They’ll do what they always do, attack the opposing defense however they see fit, but I don’t think we should write off 12 personnel because of the inherent advantages it provides in the modern NFL.

11 personnel doesn’t cause the same kind of problems because there’s no choice for the defense to make between base or sub – they’ll go sub 90% of the time at least.

But with Gronk and Ballard, or Gronk and Sudfeld, defenses will have to choose what they want to do. And then the Pats will take advantage.

Until Gronk gets back could they go more 11? Depends on how you feel about Sudfeld/Fells vs. Dobson/Boyce/Edelman and how they matchup against the defense.

Now if the Pats prove they can run effectively out of 11 personnel that can alter the dynamic a bit because it changes the question for the defense. Then it asks the defense if they have a linebacker or safety who can cover one of the Pats’ WRs. Most don’t, but again it’s not like it’s Moss-Welker-Stallworth-Gaffney anymore, they’d likely be covering a rookie.

So if they have a physical safety they might be okay dropping him down on say, Dobson, and getting really physical with him. That’s why I think we’ll still see a lot of 12 personnel.

It’s a game-to-game, and even snap-to-snap, thing. We’ll see how it plays out, but I’d expect a pretty good balance, with more 12 than 11 at a 50-40 ratio (10 percent will be short yardage/10/21/22/etc.).

Let’s Chat Pats!

August 29, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Let’s Chat Pats!

Slow morning as we wait to get the final preseason game over with, so let’s take some questions.

Some guys I’ll be watching tonight:

Jermaine Cunningham – still think it due to DE/DT depth being so thin, but he definitely needs to show up tonight to secure his spot.

Bequette/Buchanan – right now I think both are headed to the practice squad, with Buchanan being slightly ahead. A big game tonight out of either of them could go a long way.

Brandon Bolden – I’m still on the Bolden bandwagon, he should get plenty of carries tonight.

Forston/Vellano – Forston probably makes it by default but it’d be nice to see something to get excited about. I like Vellano but I don’t think he’s ready yet.

Rookie WRs – must keep progressing.

Logan Ryan – big night for Ryan, as it looks like he’ll be the nickel corner right off the bat next weekend.

Most of all is just no injuries!

What are you guys looking for/thinking about/worried about?

The defensive line has several players — Jermaine Cunningham, Marcus Benard, Justin Francis, Jake Bequette, Michael Buchanan — battling for a couple of spots. Can undrafted rookie Justin Green supplant Marquice Cole as the fifth cornerback, or convince the coaches to keep him as the sixth? Can Daniel Fells convince coaches to keep him over Jake Ballard? Will Tavon Wilson survive, or lose out to veteran Adrian Wilson? And can punter Zoltan Mesko hold off rookie Ryan Allen?

And now a quick word on the draft…

August 28, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Forgive me for a quick rant, but with the release of Ras-I Dowling we’re getting an outpouring of tweets like this:

#Patriots had a lot more invested in Ras-I Dowling, whom they cut today, than they do Tim Tebow. Big swing and miss seldom talked about.

— Eric Edholm (@Eric_Edholm) August 28, 2013

We’ll leave the “seldom talked about” part alone and focus more on the criticism of ANY team being bad drafters.

The draft is one mode of team-building. Free agency is another. There are no extra points or wins awarded if you hit on more draft prospects than you miss on.

There will always be first-rounders (or second-rounders in Ras-I’s case) who are out of the league in a matter of years, if not months. And there will be sixth rounders who end up being the best ever to play the game.

Really, that’s what makes the draft such an interesting process. Players are studied, poked and prodded, questioned, examined, and in the end none of it can matter.

So let’s talk about the team that everyone is compared to. You know, the team that hits on all their high picks, never makes a poor trade or decision. You know who I’m talking about? Of course not, because that team doesn’t exist.

What matters most is building a good team and winning games. It doesn’t matter if your whole team is free agents or drafted or manifested in someone’s basement.

You can go right down the line for every team in the NFL and cherry pick horrible draft misfires. Are some teams better than others at it? Sure. But every time a high-round pick gets cut or traded there’s so much surprise and criticism. Like this doesn’t happen CONSTANTLY. TO EVERY TEAM.

I’m at the point now where it’s comical to me. How do people still expect the order players were drafted in to be the order of how good they end up being?

Look, I really enjoy the draft, but it’s time to stop acting like there’s really a hard science to it that anyone has figured out. Can smart football analysts look at tape and tell you who’s good, who will fit into a scheme? Sure.

But for every one of those guys there’s another one who fell through the cracks, or just wasn’t elite in college yet flourishes in the pro game that NO ONE can account for.

In the end they all cross eachother out along with the free agency misses and hits, and what we’re left with is the good teams winning games and the bad teams losing games.

So just remember, the draft is but one way to add players to your team, and really, it’s a crapshoot for everyone.

Who’s the best running back in your opinion?

I might be in the minority but I think Brandon Bolden gives Ridley a run for his money in camp, at least as the early down back. Regardless of how that turns out I think we’ll see a rotation there. Clearly it seems like Vereen is the passing-down back, and really, there’s no one to […]
