Michael Buchanan solidified his spot for sure tonight. He was consistently in the backfield providing pressure and even found a way to knock down a pass. He has the length and quickness the Patriots like from their defensive ends. He didn’t look like a 7th round pick tonight.

The Patriots are “leaning toward” keeping Gronkowski on the 53-man roster to start the regular season, according to NFL Network’s Albert Breer.

W2W4: Five things we’ll be focused on in Giants-Patriots – ESPN Boston

Good list, but again, I think Leon Washington is safe. There’s really not much for him to prove returning kicks in the preseason, he’s consistently shown he’s a top NFL return guy. Why risk him to injury making him prove something he’s already proven?

Instead they’ve given other guys chances to show what they can do should they need to go down the depth chart.

151 regular season wins for the Patriots under Belichick. That’s 26 more victories for any coach during that span, outdistancing Philadelphia’s (and now Kansas City’s) Reid. Mike Shanahan (106), Tony Dungy (104), Jeff Fisher (104) and Tom Coughlin (102) are next, yet well behind Belichick.

Not bad for a guy who doesn’t know how to draft. But seriously folks, great stuff in this one and it was nearly impossible to pick just one amazing BB stat.

If the over/under is at 2.5 for new players picked up after the 53 man roster cuts, which one are you taking? I’d think Pats will look to add at least two new players, most likely veterans they feel are easily plug & play types, to fill out the back end of roster. I’m thinking along both the OL & DL. Also a decent chance they add a DB or WR if someone they covet shakes free, imo. Thoughts?

Yeah, your thoughts = my thoughts. Grab an OL and a DL, veteran guys who get cut because their teams don’t want to guarantee their salaries.

That’s why I think guys like Buchanan and Bequette are likely to get the axe (try to get them on the practice squad). They’re just too thin at OL/DL to keep around developmental defensive ends who don’t bring a lot to the party at this point. Buchanan is the priority for me there.

Tough seeing it be more than two guys though, I think that’s the sweet spot. My wildcard position would be cornerback., wouldn’t rule out WR but I’m always pounding the “throw the young guys in there and let them grow” drum.

Of course, it will be an interesting weekend, guaranteed to have one of those spit-take “they cut HIM!?!?!” moments.

From our old friend Nuggetpalooza: Since the start of the 2012 season, New England opponents who have tried runs on 3rd and 4th and short situations — classified as five yards or less — picked up a first down on just 43 percent of the time, the lowest percentage in the NFL. It Is What […]
