townienews:

If you’d like to get a #Buttfumble shirt in time for Thursday’s game order by 1pm today. Choose Priority shipping and it should arrive Thursday, just in time for the (*gasp!*) AFC East 1st place showdown between the Pats and Jets in Foxboro. Hoodathunkit?

And obviously we remember, honor and cherish the greatest football fail in history because, well, it’s the Buttfumble. But the perpetrator of said assterpiece won’t be playing Thursday night. And don’t expect anything like how previous contests between these two AFC East rivals have gone Thursday night. No asswhipping handed down by the Pats. Regardless of what the Vegas oddsmakers (Pats by 12.5?) say. This will be a tough game. A rough-n-tumble, won in the trenches, junkpunch you in the mouth slugfest kind of affair. Jets kinda shouldn’t have won Week 1. But maybe the same could be said for the Pats? Pats are as banged up as someone who went to a bachelor party the night before. The Jets are dinged up, lead by a rookie QB making his 1st start in Foxboro, against Belichick, on primetime. Youth abounds with the Pats. The Jets will be playing with house money, the old “nothing to lose” mentality. Could get messy as neither team has established a tempo or style yet, though it is only Week 2. Expecting Foxboro faithful to get lubed and bring the noise. TFB & Crew will need it.

Also, if anyone has some Stick Em, please visit Stevan Ridley before game time. Thanks!

OK – get your Buttfumble shirt today at The Townie News Store. Plenty more to come this week as we gear up for the Rex rhetoric and some serious Bradyface on national TV. Talk soon. GFY, Jets! Let’s Go Pats!

The Patriots running back broke his left wrist during his first snap against the Bills, will require surgery and miss at least four weeks while he recovers, according to a source. A second source told the Herald the Patriots had an idea Vereen would miss some time when they examined him yesterday. But the follow-up tests revealed the break, according to the first source.

If the Pats bring back Andre Carter is that saying they don’t have much faith in chandler Jones progress? That’s what I would read into it.

I was worried about Chandler Jones this offseason, but after seeing him in the preseason and against the Bills, I feel good about where he’s headed. PFF graded him out with a 2.4 overall, led the team with a QB hit and two hurries, and was third on the team with three stops.

In re-watching the game last night and specifically focusing on him I thought he looked faster than last year and I was really impressed with his hand-fighting skills and how aggressively he was attacking the offensive linemen.

This is not to make excuses to say the pressure was where it needed to be, but it’s worth pointing out that the Pats didn’t give up a 20+ passing play for the first time since 2009. They also played very conservatively, and every little bit of pressure Jones generated was reliant on him winning his matchup.

All that said, at the end of the game yesterday before looking at any stats or anything, I was feeling the same way. “Where was Chandler Jones?” But I think when you take a closer look he actually had a pretty good game and caused the Bills a lot of problems inside.

I think as the season carries on we’ll see more and more out of him, because to me he looked stronger and faster than he was last year. If they do sign Andre Carter I’d view it as adding a veteran defensive end, a position where they only have four players, one who’s a rookie and the other is a second-year guy who has barely played at all.

While Rob Gronkowski is inching closer to playing, a source today said it was still “unlikely” that he would be ready to go in Thursday night’s game against the New York Jets. That being said, he has not been completely ruled out at this stage. He’s still in the wait-and-see category, although, the chances still aren’t great for him to play.

What are your thoughts on the O line? I watched the game on Game Rewind and while there were plays where Brady had plenty of time to throw, there were also many plays where he didn’t have a clean pocket. It reminded me a bit of the last two Super Bowls. Reason to be concerned or does the Bills’ D line deserve some credit?

Very good question. Here’s how PFF graded them out:

  • Vollmer: 3.6 (1 hurry)
  • Solder: 2.8 (4 hurries)
  • Mankins: 2.8 (2 hurries)
  • Wendell: .9 (2 hits, 1 hurry)
  • Connolly: -.7 (1 sack, 1 hurry, 1 hit)
You have to give some credit to Mike Pettine and the Buffalo defense. Pettine knows how to mask his coverages to make life difficult for the o-line. Kyle Williams and Marcel Dareus are especially the kind of players who traditionally give the Pats problems. Considering all that, it wasn’t horrible.
Still, I continue to wonder if Dan Connolly is really a long-term answer at guard. We hoped to see Marcus Cannon compete with him for that job, but for now it looks like they like Cannon best as the swing tackle, who could play guard if necessary.
But outside of him I really like the offensive line and think they fit the Pats playing style extremely well. One thing I would like to see is an improvement from Wendell in pass blocking, he scored a -2.0 against the Bills and was a -4.0 there last season.
