Frenz: Five Ways Pats Can Gear Up for Super Bowl XLV Run

Gotta agree with FOPP’er Erik Frenz on all his points, and not just because he threw me some linkage!

Patriots DVOA Chart UPDATED

Well this has to be the headline so I’m just going to let Football Outsiders say it for me:

The 2010 New England Patriots have now passed their 2007 brethren for the top offensive DVOA of all-time, and their win over Green Bay launched them into consideration as the greatest team of the DVOA Era.

Pretty crazy huh? It just goes to show you that whether it’s a vertical or horizontal attack, offensive efficiency is about one thing, moving the ball and scoring. Doesn’t matter how you get there, or how fast.

The thing about the 2010 offense is that they’ve had to be more efficient because they’ve had less time of possession on average per game. The formula for success has become pretty clear for the New England Patriots. If the defense can just get off the field the offense should be able to win the game for them.

Speaking of defense, despite what seemed like another poor showing the Pats defensive DVOA continues to improve. So for the first time this year we can actually the say “the Pats defense has just been getting better and better” and it’s actually true, at least since Thanksgiving.

Behind the scenes, Taylor is working extremely hard right now,” O’Shea said. ”he’s doing what we ask him to do, which is go to practice, and try to get better every day. That’s what he’s done. He’s had some great receivers in front of him that he can learn from, and if he does so, he’ll continue to progress. All we ask of him is to continue to work hard, and I thin he has worked hard.

Patriots History Tuesday: Tom Brady’s Biggest Comback

December 21, 2010 by Mike Dussault

I knew pretty early on during the offseason of 2009 that I would have to be in attendance for Tom Brady’s first game back. After all, I told him I’d wouldn’t forget him and I didn’t.

If you like the video please vote for me here! I could win a ticket to the Super Bowl!

It was pretty surprising when the Bills looked sharper than the Pats, and with the Patriots losing 24-13 with five minutes to go “fans” started exiting the stadium. I admit I might’ve yelled at a couple of people who must’ve thought they were going to beat the traffic… had they not watched a Patriots game in the last decade?

All it took was a bonehead play from Leodis McKelvin to open the door, and boom, Brady directed his biggest comeback in the game he came back.

Let’s appreciate that final drive and hope we don’t need one like this when Sunday rolls around.

Patriots Snap Percentage Charts

These get a little harder to read as the season goes on but I do think there is insight to be taken from them.

For example it’s pretty easy to spot when someone has a drop in playing time who starts getting more time as a result.

Some trends to point out:

Tully Banta-Cain and Jermaine Cunningham’s snaps falling, while Eric Moore’s rose this week.

Chung played more than Meriweather or Sanders. His value to the defense is obvious.

Jerod Mayo is a tackling machine, but Vince Wilfork is the MVP of the defense.

It has been interesting to see Brady seem to take the inconsistency of the passing game and some of these spring struggles in stride. Generally known for his fiery personality, even on the practice field, he seems to understand the situation and the process that he’s working through. He said during a radio interview that […]
