Let’s all remember this hit from Ryan Clarke the last time the Patriots and Steelers met up. This hit might actually be a $1 million fine these days.

The new Football Outsiders DVOA rankings are out, and the trends for the Patriots don’t look too hot.

Offensively the Pats have been pretty much in a steady decline since the first game of the season. Despite this the Patriots still have the best offensive DVOA in all of football.

Defensively (where I’ve flipped the ratings to negative to make the chart a little easier to analyze) the Pats are starting to regress again the last two weeks after decent improvement since the Jets game.

On Special Teams the trend of the last three games of marginally poor performances continued.

It’s not getting any easier for the Patriots with the Steelers on deck and the Colts in the hole. Reversing the current trends will no be small task. Graphically, this looks like a team headed in the wrong direction and that’s disturbing.

Found this video today of linebacker drills from training camp 2010, or more specifically INSIDE linebacker drills. Thought it was kind of interesting. As you can see they’re working on gaining leverage based on where the play is going. There’s a notable “Good Job, Dane” shouted by Matt Patricia at one point.

On a related note I’m happy to see Tyrone McKenzie catch on with Tampa Bay. Even to my slowly-being-trained eyes Fletcher looked like the better fit for New England defense than Tyrone. He was quicker to react and has better length which is more conducive to taking on blockers, and then shedding them without allowing them to get into you.

Dan Koppen has some competition for sexiest red headed Patriot as Shayne Graham comes aboard while Stephen Gostkowski nurses his quad back to health. At least his initials are SG too.

Patriots 28th in Average Time of Possession

November 9, 2010 by Mike Dussault

While most of the offensive statistics for this years Pats are solid (2nd in points, 5th in 3rd down conversions, 10th in red zone TDs) there is one stat that they aren’t so good in and it tells a lot.

They are currently 28th in time of possession, and their average time of possession in the last three games is low enough to put them 31st with only the lowly Cowboys coming in worse.

Put it this way, in the last three games the Giants (the number one ranked team) has had the ball, on average, thirteen and a half minutes more than the Patriots. That is staggering.

This is a reflection of two things, the defense not being able to get off the field on 3rd down (they’re ranked 32nd in the NFL) and the offense being inconsistent. It seems that there are two types of Patriots offensive possessions this year: 3 and outs, or quick and efficient drives that go right down the field and end in touchdowns.

The Patriots must find some consistency. This is an area where more sustained drives will help the defense, who will in turn be more rested and better adjusted to get off the field themselves.
