The Patriots did not play with a true fullback in 2011, and it remains unclear if they will do so in 2012. Regardless of whether they do or not, short-yardage situations will remain an area of focus, as the team often turned to throwing the football in such a situation last season. Short-yardage situations help an offense establish grit and a hard-nosed mentality. On Friday night, the Patriots did failed to do so on three straight plays.

A very solid outing for DT Ron Brace, who showed off top-notch strength early in the third quarter, and then may have single-handedly got the ball back for the Patriots on the Bucs’ final offensive drive, with back-to-back run-stuffs.

On the flip side, not a whole lot to write home about from DT Brandon Deaderick. If the Patriots keep 4 defensive tackles, it will likely be Brace as the third option, and Deaderick as the fourth option/gameday inactive.

Brace’s sheer size makes him an interesting option inside. It seems like he could possibly be a very good fit for what they’re trying to do on defense now in the Double Nose.

They will have no problem defending the run. That bodes well in the AFC East, where the quarterbacks may be lacking but the teams want to establish the run first to keep their passers out of long yardage. Good luck doing any of that against the Patriots. Belichick’s teams always have been tough against the run, but the Patriots appear to be even better this year. Vince Wilfork and Kyle Love are formidable in the middle. Ends Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones are much better at holding the edge than projected. And then there are the linebackers. In terms of stopping the run, it may be hard to find a unit better than Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes, and Dont’a Hightower — save the 49ers and Texans. It’s promising that the Patriots are so good against the run, but this isn’t 2002. Teams now live and die by the pass. At least we know the Patriots will be forcing them to convert long yardages. That’s where you start.

Good recap here from Bedard, and really the benefit of having such good linebackers is that they can keep athletes on the field to defend the pass and worry less about having “heavy” personnel out there.

New England Patriots vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Highlights 2012 (HD) (by BenjiPatriots)

I don’t know you guys, I just find it hard to get myself that worked up over anything good or bad in a preseason game. Doesn’t look like any major season ending injuries and really that’s all that matters.

So what did you take away from the game today? Some pros and cons

August 25, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Off the top of my head…

  1. I think there will be some growing pains at times with the line this year. But given the last decade and the talent on the front end I have to trust they’ll be generally solid at worst. And let’s not forget this could be a 60% different line by the time we take the field against the Titans. Game shape Mankins and  healthy Vollmer alone will do wonders.
  2. I like what I see on defense. They are stopping the run and Ninkovich looks strong at left end. They will be able to send athletes after the quarterback on every down.
  3. Not convinced we can get the must-get yard on the ground yet.
  4. Spikes is staying on the field in nickel.
  5. Wilfork is vital to everything the Pats are trying to do on defense this year, and I really hope they don’t have to run him into the ground, especially on clear passing downs.
  6. Gregory stabilizing the back end of the defense would be a huge plus.
  7. I don’t see any way Chung stays healthy the entire season unfortunately, this Tavon Wilson could be thrust into a major role this year.
  8. Our kicking game could be DOMINANT this year between Gostkowski and Mesko.
  9. The Patriots played straight up vanilla on defense, the Bucs we playing a little Rocky Road. It looked like a Jets defense walk about out over there.
  10. I think this will be a fun Patriots team to watch. Though they started badly they got their junk together and showed mental toughness on the road, in some heat. That’s a good quality to have, and one that they had last year. They never got rattled. That’s a good sign.
  11. I think I’m going to dub this defense the “Double Nose”. More on that later this weekend.

Look at how quick and hard that cut was, the safety should’ve blasted him yet barely got a finger on him.

Vollmer is coming off a broken leg/ankle sustained Oct. 27 in a game against the Miami Dolphins. “He looks good right now, too. I don’t know his whole update right now, but he looks good and I know he’s working hard,” he said. “There’s good promise there.” Logan Mankins, Dan Connolly team up to train […]
