One of my all-time favorite seasons, one where I finally got see Brady in person both in the opener vs. Buffalo and the huge upset in San Diego which remains the best fan experience of my life. They weren’t the most talented Pats team but they certainly had heart.

2006

PATRIOTS WIN THEIR FOURTH STRAIGHT AFC EAST TITLE, LOSE TO THE COLTS IN THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP:

The Patriots entered the 2006 season without their two starting wide receivers from 2005; David Givens left in free agency, while Deion Branch held out for a new contract before being traded to Seattle in early September. Eventually replacing them were Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney, who was signed as a street free agent in October. Back-to-back losses in November ended the team’s streak of 57 games without consecutive losses, three games shy of the NFL record. With a 12–4 record and their fourth straight division title, the Patriots entered the playoffs as the #4 seed, defeating the New York Jets 37-16 in the Wild Card Playoffs. A close 24-21 win over the top-seeded San Diego Chargers on the road set the Patriots up to face their rival, the Indianapolis Colts, in the AFC Championship. Despite opening up a 21–3 lead in the 2nd quarter, the Patriots stumbled down the stretch at the RCA Dome, and the Colts emerged with a 38–34 victory.

-NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS-

1976

PATRIOTS GO 11-3 & EARN WILD CARD BERTH,LOSE TO THE RAIDERS IN THE WILD CARD ROUND BY A CONTROVERSIAL CALL THAT GAVE MOMENTUM BACK TO THE RAIDERS:

Following the 1975 season, Plunkett was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, and eventually would win two Super Bowls with the Oakland Raiders.

The draft picks acquired in the Plunkett trade were used to select defensive backs Mike Haynes and Tim Fox and set the stage for the team’s first winning seasons in the NFL. Second-year player Steve Grogan – who had played much of the 1975 season with Plunkett injured – became New England’s top quarterback in 1976. The Patriots finished 11-3, their best record in team history to that point, and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 1963.

Their opponent in the first round would be the Oakland Raiders, whose only regular season loss had come at the hands of New England, 48-17. By late in the game, the Patriots were leading the Raiders, 21–17. On a critical 3rd-down play late in the 4th quarter, Patriots defensive tackle Ray “Sugar Bear” Hamilton appeared to get a critical sack on Oakland quarterbackKen Stabler, which would have forced the Raiders into a 4th-down situation and the possible end to their season. However, referee Ben Dreith called a roughing the passer penalty on Hamilton, nullifying the sack and giving the Raiders an automatic 1st down deep in New England territory. Replays would show that there was no illegal contact – a point that Stabler himself would all but concede in interviews years later. The call would ultimately prove fatal to the Patriots, as Stabler would score on a short touchdown run with less than a minute left, and the Raiders held on for a 24–21 win. Partially because of the controversy, the league never assigned Dreith to officiate Patriots games again.

Could 2014 secondary be best of Bill Belichick Era? – WEEI | Christopher Price

Could 2014 secondary be best of Bill Belichick Era? – WEEI | Christopher Price

Memmmmories…. How long ago does it seem when the Patriots had one of the absolute dominant defenses of the NFL? I don’t know how this group is going to come together. Sure, on paper, it looks like it could be great, but we all know how quickly injuries can derail things. Hopefully it all comes together like we think it could.

MustketFire.com: Ranking the Tom Brady Era: 12 Years of #12

MustketFire.com: Ranking the Tom Brady Era: 12 Years of #12

Fun read and hopefully there will be plenty more stuff like this to get us through the next month. I actually agree pretty much with these rankings, although I think you could re-classify some of the seasons.

The Turds: 2002, 2005, 2009: For whatever reason, these teams just fell flat. None were more frustrating than the 2009 team that really just didn’t have much heart. All three seasons were somewhat transition years as the teams the following year were much different looking. 2005’s team just couldn’t get the bounces in Denver, injuries to Rodney Harrison and Matt Light, as well as Bruschi’s stroke that caused him to miss much of season did them in early.

The Overcome Adversity: 2001, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2013 – these teams always have a special place in my heart. 2013 might’ve been my favorite non-Super Bowl season of all time. These teams might not’ve been the most talented but they overcome the injuries and departures that hit them hard. 2001 is just an amazing season.

The Best Teams (SB or not): 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011- these teams were lucky with injuries for the most part and were just firing on all cylinders for most of their seasons. The first two ended with Super Bowls, ‘07 and ’11 came up one stopped drive short and 2010 was the perfect storm where the Jets just thoroughly beat the Pats after getting toasted 45-3 a month before.
