The new Football Outsiders DVOA rankings are out, and the trends for the Patriots don’t look too hot.

Offensively the Pats have been pretty much in a steady decline since the first game of the season. Despite this the Patriots still have the best offensive DVOA in all of football.

Defensively (where I’ve flipped the ratings to negative to make the chart a little easier to analyze) the Pats are starting to regress again the last two weeks after decent improvement since the Jets game.

On Special Teams the trend of the last three games of marginally poor performances continued.

It’s not getting any easier for the Patriots with the Steelers on deck and the Colts in the hole. Reversing the current trends will no be small task. Graphically, this looks like a team headed in the wrong direction and that’s disturbing.

Patriots DVOA Chart Updated 11/4/10

The Patriots offense had a good game, but the defense stumbled a bit. Special Teams remains strong.

(Note: High Offensive/Special Teams number are better, but you want your Defensive Number to be low, into the negatives)

New England Patriots DVOA Trends

Above you’ll find the Football Outsiders rankings for the Patriots broken down by week. One important thing to note is that you want your defensive ranking to be negative, while you want you offense and special teams to go up.

So what can we tell from this graph? The defense is definitely improving on almost a week by week basis. However the offense has been slowly trending downward. Special Teams have been solid, and slowly trending upwards.

Football Outsiders: Patriots #3 Overall DVOA

Football Outsiders: Patriots #3 Overall DVOA

The Patriots are again ranked third this week in DVOA. They are 2nd in offense, 27th in defense and 5th in special teams. Their defensive DVOA is slowly starting to creep up the rankings which is a good sign. They’re actually a lot closer to the middle of the pack than they are to last place, so don’t let the 27th ranked defense fool you too much.

Quick hit reaction to the Patriots 20-18 loss to the Cardinals

I’m a big picture guy so I hope no one’s expecting me to overreact to today’s stinker. In simplest terms the Patriots lost Aaron Hernandez to an injury and seemed unprepared to alter their game plan accordingly. In the first half especially they looked disjointed on offense. At one point it felt like Stevan Ridley […]
