Everything’s great around here. [I’m] just going out to practice with the team and practicing with the team. It’s helpful every single week to get the chemistry back down and get the timing of football back down. “We were on the same page from they very get go. And still on the same page and it’s going good. I’m progressing every week, I’m feeling better every week, getting stronger every week and better conditioning every week. Just still sticking to the motto ‘day by day.’”

Everybody has trouble with him. You look at all the games last year and all the games this year, it doesn’t matter because they flip him, he plays on both guards, the centers slide to him. He’s seen plenty of different combinations and matched up against plenty of different players: big guards, quick guards, strong guards, athletic, however you want to put him, he gives them a lot of trouble.

But facing teams that are two-back, power running teams like the Baltimores of the world versus a team like Atlanta last week that we were in sub-defense, most of the entire game other than a handful of plays. Now we’re seeing teams like San Francisco last year, Buffalo this year, Philadelphia in preseason and I’m sure there will be a little more of that trend in the league that the running game is more of a sideline-to-sideline running game as opposed to the traditional what we’ve seen for years out of even two-back or two-tight end teams that double team, power block, pulling guards and stuff like that. Over the course of the season, you’re going to have to deal with all those things. As soon as your opponent sees you’re not very good at one thing, you can expect to see a whole lot more of that. That’s what they do if they have it. That’s kind of the challenge, is to have enough depth and variety in your defense to be able to match up to those different type of offensive systems and be able to compete with them.

Backup LeGarrette Blount has exactly 17 carries with a fullback on the field and 17 carries without. With one he averages 6.2 yards per carry, and without one he averages 2.5, which is the second biggest difference in the league.

On the Gregory interception, Belichick points out a strong one-on-one rush by rookie defensive end Chandler Jones which also tightens the pocket. “Chandler played probably his best game of the year,” Belichick says, highlighting how Jones used a power rush on rookie left tackle Jonathan Martin before coming back inside.
