Patriots vs Bengals Preview

October 5, 2013 by Mike Dussault

The inconsistent Cincinnati Bengals host the undefeated New England Patriots in Week 5. It’s an interesting matchup, as the Bengals have been good enough to hand the Green Bay Packers a loss, but also inconsistent enough to sit at just 2-2 through four weeks. New England, on the other hand, has stayed perfect through four games despite not having a litany of offensive weapons they’re accustomed to having.

Despite Cincy being a little erratic and the Pats being under-manned, it’s a surprise that fans only need to pay $122 on average for this one, with a get-in tag of just $39. In fact, it’s just 3% more expensive than Cincinnati Bengals tickets have averaged for 2013 home game price. It’s also a whopping 53% below the average price for Patriots tickets on the road this year.

Despite the soft ticket price this week, this matchup isn’t likely to produce soft results. After all, the Patriots just ousted a borderline desperate Atlanta Falcons on the road last week, yet again without all of their offensive studs. That proved for them once again that as long as their players aren’t dropping passes and running wrong routes like they did against the Jets in week two, Tom Brady can pretty much will them to victory.

The same can be said for Cincinnati, however, who barely lost to the Bears in week one and used a late fury against the Packers to steal an impressive in week three.

Bottom line, however, is whether or not Andy Dalton can out-dual the legendary Tom Brady. It’ll be nice if he can get a helping hand from rookie running back Giovani Bernard. And with Pats defensive tackle (aka wall) Vince Wilfork now on injured reserve, that’s something that just might happen.

Regardless, if Dalton can cut down the mistakes and attack the New England secondary with A.J. Green, the Bengals could pull off another upset. But even if they can’t, Brady and co. will make this an interesting battle that all should enjoy.

New England’s offensive line has been tremendous so far in 2013. The group currently ranks third in run blocking and fourth in pass blocking in our cumulative grades. Nate Solder ( 13.2) and Sebastian Vollmer ( 10.2) have been excellent, and they are currently our second- and third-highest graded tackles, respectively. Neither has allowed a sack or hit. Center Ryan Wendell and right guard Dan Connolly will need to step up their games this week. They are the only starters with negative grades, and they have struggled in pass protection. They will have to be better this week if they hope to keep Geno Atkins from ruining the Patriots’ game plan.

I was thinking the other day when I read that [Vince] Wilfork goes down. This is the first thought that comes into my mind. I said, If I’m a Patriots fan, I’m saying, ‘Oh, boy, at least it wasn’t Talib.’ … Look, Vince Wilfork one day will get discussed in the room about going to Canton, in my opinion. But right now, this team, the way football is played — 61-39 pass-run ratio in the NFL so far this year, or something like that, it’s very close — 61 percent passing, going against Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Julio Jones last week, [Peyton] Manning down the road. If you don’t have at least one good [cornerback] — to me, you know who he is right now? He’s Richard Sherman. He’s good, he’s physical and he knows it. And I want my cornerback to have those three traits. So, to me, that is a gigantic [factor]. You can’t let him go. But on the other hand, you also can’t guarantee him [$]30 million, and a year and a half down the road he does something stupid.

Next offseason will be interesting, as they always are. Right now I think the Franchise Tag is really perfect for Talib.
