Scarnecchia’s move was planned for a few years now; with Johnson, both sides seem to agree that this is the right time and the split is amicable; Godsey’s contract was up and his primary connection to the franchise was through Bill O’Brien (now Houston’s head coach); and Caserio remains a Patriots employee who as recently as two years ago was talking about how much he enjoys it here.

Danny Amendola may be fighting for a roster spot come March 11, the first day of the 2014 league year. Amendola signed a five-year deal worth $28.5 million ($10 million guaranteed last March), and $2 million of his $3 million base salary in 2014 becomes guaranteed if he’s on the roster at 4 p.m. on March 11. Amendola is coming off a disappointing season in which he missed four games and lost Tom Brady’s trust, and could be in danger of being cut. It would cost the Patriots $4.8 million against the cap to outright cut him, which seems unlikely given their tight cap situation, but they could designate him a post-June 1 cut, which would give him cap charges of $1.2 million in 2014 and $3.6 million in 2015. The Patriots could then use those savings to sign free agent Julian Edelman.

Patriots-Dolphins intrigue. Interesting that, after turning down interview opportunities in the past, Patriots director of pro personnel Nick Caserio accepted an opportunity to speak with the Dolphins. Maybe Caserio is just looking for interview experience. Maybe Bill Belichick wants Caserio to gain some intel on an AFC East rival. Maybe Caserio really wants the job calling his own personnel shots. Belichick has been known to overrule his scouting department on occasion in the draft and take his own guys. That has been a source of frustration for some, but Belichick has ultimate power and can do what he wants. For that reason, it’s tough to tell who’s responsible for which draft picks, but Caserio’s good work has shown up in undrafted free agency and street free-agent pickups. Both areas have immensely helped the Patriots.

They need to find an interior guy – or two – to try and eventually replace Wilfork. I know he’ll come back, but they need to think about the future. They did well with the guys they had there this season, but they need to think long-term at that spot. And they’ll probably be in the market for an edge, pressure guy, whether in the draft or in free agency.

Interior guy, eh? Where have I heard this before…?
