This week’s practices in Tampa should really be beneficial to the Pats for multiple reasons:

  1. Short week will match the same turnaround time for when they have to play the Jets on Thanksgiving.
  2. Facing a different scheme is great experience for dealing with the unfamiliar, making adjustments, etc.
  3. Team bonding time away from home always helps.
  4. Grinding through the hardest week of August in the humidity of Florida should help harden the team.
  5. Getting to hit someone other than their own teammates for a few days helps make things a little more tolerable.

I think all young tackles struggle on plays and protections in this league, OK?” he said. “Just do a little thinking. Who did Matt Light replace? Bruce Armstrong. Did anybody think that it was going to be (smooth)? OK. Did you think he had any problems with it to start with? Well hell yeah they all had problems. It is what it is. "Personally, I’m pleased with the way those kids are developing – I’m really pleased with the way they’re developing. Is it the finished product? No and we have a couple weeks to get it to as good as it can be, and then we’re going to play, we’re going to play a game. He started for us at right tackle last year, Nate did, Marcus played some. It is what it is. So whoever goes out there, we’re going to put our best players out on the field and we expected nothing but their best.

“The coaches are tired,” Belichick said. “The players are tired, but we’re going to have a short week during the season. We’ve got a Sunday-Thursday game (week) during the season. That’s what training camp is for. It’s to suck it up. It’s to be mentally tough in whatever situations you have. You’re tired. You’re sore. You didn’t get enough sleep. You travel. Whatever it is, you block that out and you focus on what you can control, which is your performance and your effort. You go out there, and you work through it, as a team and individually. That’s the way it’s going to be during the season. “There’s going to be plenty of weeks during the season that somebody is going to be tired. Somebody is going to be sore. Some position is going to be a little short on numbers or whatever it is, and you build your toughness and your resiliency and those type of things through training camp. And it serves you well during the season. Then you look back during the season and say, ‘You know what? Maybe this isn’t really that bad. We went through a lot tougher stretch than this in camp.’ (You have) the confidence you can do it. I’m not really worried about that. These guys came to camp in good condition. We’ve had a good camp. They’ve worked hard. We’re going to put a challenge in front of them, and I expect them to meet it.”

Patriots gets some injured guys back in Tampa

August 22, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Good news, especially as we come into the home stretch.

Jeff Demps practicing…Alfonzo Dennard, Tavon Wilson, Spencer Larsen have returned to practice…plus Vollmer & Fells (taken off PUP)

— shalise manza young (@shalisemyoung) August 22, 2012

Vollmer stepped right in with the 1s, not surprisingly. But guess who’s not out there… Pat Chung. Ugh…

My latest 53-man Patriots roster (8/21)

August 22, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Things are starting to shape up nicely. Here are the main problems I’m facing for the final roster spots:

  • Bolden is out for Demps. Maybe that’s a little “bold” but I don’t really see enough out of Bolden yet to think he’s ready to make an impact this year.
  • Fells gets on there because I think the lesson learned in the Super Bowl is that you can’t effectively run this offense if the tight ends aren’t 100%, and you need insurance. If ever there was a week to get healthy for Shiancoe this is it. Though he could still get on in place of Fells.
  • The only other place I see a way around this would be to carry a 4th tackle instead of Nick McDonald,  but I like McDonald more than I like Weems.
  • Brace is on, and so is Gerard Warren even though I think he’s an easy shadow roster candidate.
  • Myron Pryor stays on PUP, get healthy and we’ll see you in October.
  • Niko is on, love what I’ve seen out of him in the preseason. He plays nasty and can do a number of things.
  • Ihedigbo hanging by a thread.
  • If Dennard gets healthy he could make a push, neither Cole nor Moore were overly impressive last night.
  • Will Allen is just about a lock, especially with Chung showing his penchant for getting dinged again last night. He’s good all around veteran insurance.

Full 53-man roster after the jump…

QB (3) Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett
RB (4) Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead, Jeff Demps
WR (6) Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Julian Edelman, Jabar Gaffney, Deion Branch, Matthew Slater
