Can the New York Jets Be Successful Attacking the New England Patriots Safeties? | Bleacher Report

Good stuff from Frenz here. Really I think this game comes down to one thing, whether Sanchez’s deep throws are complete/pass interference or incomplete/picked.

New owner Jimmy Haslam wants to model Browns after Steelers – NFL.com

New owner Jimmy Haslam wants to model Browns after Steelers – NFL.com

Earlier in the year, Tom Brady acknowledged that the New England Patriots were shifting philosophically under new/old coordinator Josh McDaniels, which is why he wasn’t surprised to see the fast start by the running game. That evolution certainly was affected by injuries to tight end Aaron Hernandez, who was out for nearly a month, and receiver Wes Welker’s would-be replacement, Julian Edelman, who hasn’t played since Week 3. As it turns out, Welker’s still pretty good at age 31, and the Patriots have relied on him to make up the difference. But it’s fair to wonder now if the Patriots still haven’t found their identity on that side of the ball. It’s hard to blame the offense for New England’s three losses, particularly when a missed field goal cost the team a win over Arizona, and the defense crumbled late against Baltimore and the Seattle Seahawks. Still, the Patriots didn’t get better as those games went on, and couldn’t close opponents out when given the opportunity. These issues are fixable. McDaniels is sharp, Brady is elite, and it’s a good bet they’re going to be better in November and December than they are now. But you have to wonder if this transitional period could wind up being costly, in terms of playoff positioning, in the long run.

Rob Ninkovich said today that Spikes is the Pats’ best trash talker, and there are times when Ninkovich can’t help but laugh at the things he says.

“Clever, cruel, all of the above,” Ninkovich said. “It’s entertaining for me. I always enjoy it.”

Pats playmakers need to step up in crunch time

October 18, 2012 by Mike Dussault

There’s something disturbing about the fact that the Pats are 12-12 since 2009 in games decided by a touchdown or less.

But I think there’s some context needed.

Let’s also point out the Pats have lost just 5 games in that time span by more than 7 points, and that includes an 8-point loss to the Steelers in 2011.

The other four:

2009: Loss to Saints (38-17), Loss to Ravens in playoffs (33-14).

2010: Loss to Jets (28-14), Loss to Browns (34-14)

So yes the Pats are average in close games, but they also haven’t lost by more than one score in almost two years.

We can go round and round with whether the offense or defense bears more responsibility, but what it comes down to is playmakers making plays in crunch time. A single defensive stop or offensive third down conversion could’ve made the difference in any of those 12 close losses.

In past years they got those plays, especially in 2010 when they didn’t lose a single close one until the playoff game against the Jets.

What it comes down to this year is that the Patriots need their playmakers, old and new, to start stepping up at the end of games. If they do there’s no limit to how far this team can go.

[S]ince Brady returned from his lost 2008 season, the Patriots are 12-12 in games decided by seven points or fewer. That includes 1-5 in games decided by less than a field goal, tied with the Browns for the most such losses. In the past 3½ years, the Patriots have more losses by seven points or fewer (12) than they did in Brady’s first seven seasons combined (10).

do you know who impressed me that really hasn’t been mentioned yet: dont’a hightower. he was calling the plays and audibles. he seemed to fit right in and showed he can contribute from day 1. also showed great instincts and play recognition by blowing up 2-3 plays behind the line of scrimmage. bolden, i thought, also did well. he held his own.

Hightower was universally praised today, especially for his size.
