[T]he 49ers’ offensive shifts are the key to their offense. They utilize them very well to help set up blocking schemes and get the numbers advantage, so it is imperative that the Patriots defenders communicate throughout the game. They need to make sure they are lined up properly and have their assignments; otherwise, they will go down in flames like the Chicago Bears’ once dominant defense did earlier in the season.

Great stuff in here about how good the 49ers are. Should be an awesome challenge for the Patriots tonight, one that will tell us a lot about them.

“The Niners have yet, really, to be put in a position where they are forced to play catch-up or stay paced with a high-powered offense,” the executive said. “If that happens and the Patriots have the ability to create distance on the scoreboard, you’re going to see the Niners get put into a foreign territory on offense where they have to hurry up and get back into the game. Mayo is coming into his own as well. “It’s kind of like a quarterback: The linebacker has to make multiple, multiple decisions on every play,” coach Bill Belichick said. “So many different things happen in a split second during the course of the play, just like it is for a quarterback.

Great read on Mayo that echoes a lot of that I wrote about earlier this week. It’s clear, people are taking notice of Jerod Mayo this year.
