Patriots lost, but they didn’t fail | Boston Herald

Sometimes Ron Borges nails it despite however you feel about him, this is one of those times…

Sustained success results in one of two things: thankfulness or arrogance. It breeds appreciation or entitlement. Only you can decide where you fit but understand this: The 2012 New England Patriots didn’t fail to do anything but win their last game, a fate they will share with 30 of their peers by the end of Super Bowl Sunday

If we let welker walk, how do you think that will effect the offense?

January 26, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Not gonna lie, it will be a little scary, Welker was Brady’s third down blankee. But between Gronk and Hernandez he should be okay. The offense would have to adjust, but they’re in far better position to do it now with their stable of tight ends and running backs. The more I think about it the harder it is for me to justify breaking the bank on Welker when there’s ZERO wide receiver and cornerback depth on the roster, and significant needs at defensive tackle. I’m not sure how it will go, but the Patriots were a top-10 offense before Welker and they’d most likely still be one after him.

And on the first day that Ed Reed was a free agent Bill Belichick appeared outside his window…

Nice work from @ErikFrenz via @RumfordJohnny.

Youth movement promising for Pats defense | Boston Herald

“We have a great foundation as far as young guys getting the experience of a long season. A lot of rookies that were starting this year,” Ninkovich said. “Getting that in is going to help us. Having a full offseason with those guys is going to help us. I think, again, our future is definitely bright, so we’ve got to continue to be mentally strong and learn from it.”

Receivers. Branch is done; Welkah will probably test the market, and the Bear Jew is limited. Torey Smith-like ability to get behind the defense is needed.

January 25, 2013 by Mike Dussault

I’d agree, but I think finding the proverbial deep threat that is also smart enough to play in the Patriots system will be a tough challenge. Randy Moss was special in that way.

There’s a growing contingent of Pats fans who are okay letting Welker walk, and spending that money on defensive backs and new receivers. I can’t say I’m totally opposed to that. But I think they need at least two new receivers who can play. I’d be fine with just a bigger, physical receiver on the outside even if he’s not a straight up burner like Torey Smith. Smith fits the Ravens, run, then play-action toss deep offense, but the Pats will require more than a one trick pony.

Sunday Non-Pats Posits

I’m going to try and work in a new weekly post each Sunday here that will feature some commentary about what went down around the rest of the NFL, especially with the Pats biggest rivals. These are always some of my favorite weekend reading, especially during the offseason, so here are mine. LeSean McCoy Traded […]
