In the deal, the Patriots traded quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel for a 2009 second-round draft choice that was used to select safety Patrick Chung (34th overall). The final verdict: Neither team won. Although Vrabel was slowing down and had a high cap figure, the Patriots still could have benefited from his presence in 2009 (fractured locker room) and perhaps in 2010. Also, Chung couldn’t get on the field in the 2012 AFC Championship Game despite a clean bill of health and is likely to be playing elsewhere next season. As for the Chiefs, the investment in Cassel – the most important part of the deal on either side, given the importance of the position and contract they gave him – never paid off. One could argue that’s what ultimately cost general manager Scott Pioli his job as Chiefs general manager after four seasons.
If the Ravens win, it puts New England in play to possibly be part of the NFL’s 2013 season-opening game, which is traditionally held on the Thursday of opening weekend and hosted by the Super Bowl winner. It’s a tough spot to be the visitor in that type of situation. The Patriots are scheduled to play the Ravens on the road next season and would look like a prime candidate to be picked.

Good perspective on the fall out from Bedard…
I think any criticism of Brady is nonsense. His team was less talented than its foe. His team didn’t play well. He didn’t play that well. Nobody in the salary cap era is ever going to be as good as Montana. That’s just the way it is. To me, if there is a common link between the playoff losses to the Giants, Jets, and Ravens, it’s a lack of execution. This has to be what Bill Belichick is racking his brain about. Why does his team execute so consistently during the regular season — especially in the second half of the season — but fail to do so in the biggest games? I don’t think there’s a simple answer. I think the Patriots were just as physical as the Ravens. My fleeting thought: The Patriots seem to play tight in big spots. It seems like, as individuals, they are trying not to make a mistake. Almost robotic. The Ravens, Giants, and Jets appeared to take the fight to the Patriots with an aggressive, throw-caution-to-the-wind mentality. I could be wrong on that, but I think the Patriots need to find some of that themselves.
So true, seems like when teams play the Patriots now they just play loose as if they have nothing to lose and let it all hang out. The Patriots play like they’re trying to live up to the Belichick/Brady teams of the past that won Super Bowl even though those teams are long gone. Look at how flawlessly the Jets, Giants and Ravens have played in defeating the Patriots the last three seasons.

Maybe picking up one of our Do Your Job tees will make you feel better about how the season ended?
If the Patriots go to more of a 3-4 system, who plays the 5-techniques? And where would it leave Jerod Mayo, who was once prone to getting pushed around inside in the 3-4?
I don’t think they’ll go back to the 3-4, at least in a traditional sense when it was a straight up nose tackle and two 5-techniques. They just don’t have the two-gapping defensive ends. Deaderick is almost a fit, but he’s certainly nowhere close to what Richard Seymour was.
Once they traded Seymour in 2009 and then lost Ty Warren in 2010 they just couldn’t run it effectively. They tried to plug Jarvis Green in for Seymour in 2009 but was rough against the run.
Mayo is certainly a better fit in the 4-3, where he can play more in space. They were playing him at the weak inside linebacker position in the 3-4 and he tended to get swallowed up down in tight.
