What’s important to consider is Welker’s somewhat mild disdain for the Patriots right now, according to a source close to the player. Welker apparently is a little miffed at how he was treated in last year’s opener, when offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had him targeted for a season-low five pass attempts that resulted in a season-low three receptions.
That bit of tweaking stuck in Welker’s craw all season. So did the notion that if tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski hadn’t both gotten hurt at different times, there’s a strong belief that Welker would have been limited to far fewer than the 118 receptions he finished with last season. In short, there’s a little paranoia in the Welker camp these days about his role with the Pats.

Thoughts from Bedard…

I expect the Patriots to be trying to hammer out deals with WR Wes Welker, CB Aqib Talib, RT Sebastian Vollmer, CB Kyle Arrington and WR Julian Edelman before free agency starts a week from today; Welker stands the best chance to get done, and I’d be fairly surprised if it’s not done by the start of free agency or very early in the period.

As I wrote in today’s B/R piece I’d view the Pats willingness to let Vollmer go as a sign they’re okay taking a risk at right tackle (Marcus Cannon?) to improve at WR and in the secondary. Same thing goes for Woodhead, and in reading the tea leaves it seems he could walk as well.

Truth is, Brady has set in place a new template for all other cynosure superstar players – those who have become embedded in the identity of a franchise – to follow when it comes to seeing the back end of their careers with the franchises they helped build. He’s just initiated what could be the next trend in professional sports.

Option routes, and why they drive some receivers crazy | Shutdown Corner – Yahoo! Sports

If you want to talk about the Patriots picking a receiver this offseason in free agency or the draft, they’re going to have to be able to figure all this out…

“At times, there are four decisions that a receiver needs to make after the snap the way our offense is. That’s one of the advantages of our offense, that we give players a lot of flexibility within the system to take what the defense gives us. And that’s definitely something that’s unique about our offense.”
