What type of impact do you expect Zach Sudfeld to make this season? He seems to the the UDFA star so far in camp.

August 8, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Hard to say at the moment, they’re certainly giving him as many reps as he can get and that’s a good move. But let’s see him in a game before we get too excited, because if they have to roll with Fells until Gronk gets back it sounds like he’s been pretty good too. Can Sudfeld win the starting tight end spot outright? That would be pretty amazing, considering he’s like a Gronk twin. Imagine using those two guys in a two TE sets.

But I think he’s certainly looking at this point like he’ll make the roster and possibly make Hooman expendable. We can’t forget his injury history, but there’s no question he and Thompkins are this year’s UDFA stars through two weeks of camp.

Arrington: Has arguably been the Patriots’ most consistent cornerback throughout camp, and could end up as one of the starting outside corners, especially if Alfonzo Dennard is suspended.

Haven’t made much mention of the divisive Arrington here, but I was all for his re-signing this offseason and was glad when they locked him up. You can’t put a price on his experience and versatility, despite how he’s definitely had some bad plays that have stuck out over the years. Fact is, he’s just entering his prime, and if he continues to progress he could grow into an excellent corner.

Without tackling, it’s difficult to effectively evaluate offensive and defensive linemen, but defensive tackle Marcus Forston continues to look quick, nimble and in good shape. He flashed during team drills and looks to be right in the mix among the defensive tackles to start next to Vince Wilfork.

Big takeaway: The big WR is back – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Just what we need…

Think about the team’s offense in 2011 and 2012, and then ask the question, “Who could make that type of play in the deep part of the field?” The top receivers last year were Brandon Lloyd (6-foot-0) and Wes Welker (5-foot-9). Lloyd made acrobatic catches along the sideline, but he wasn’t outleaping defenders and high-pointing the ball on vertical routes downfield. Two years ago, it was the top combination of Welker and Deion Branch (5-foot-9). Same type of deal. So what we’ve seen from Dobson (6-3, 210) is something that hasn’t shown up on the radar since the Patriots had 6-foot-4 Randy Moss running routes on the outside. This isn’t to compare Dobson to Moss. That would be ridiculous. But it’s the style of play that is being highlighted, while also keeping things in proper context (it’s early, this was a joint practice, and Dobson is far from a polished product).

Why not Evan Mathis? The Pats aren’t particularly deep at guard, trading for Groy as a camp body speaks volumes in my mind. Is Mathis an issue of $$$ or something else?

Belichick’s every move always goes back to improving the team and as much as I am excited about Shaq Mason, I don’t think there’s any doubt Mathis would improve the Patriots this season. But yes, it’s all about money and I just don’t think the Patriots could pay Mathis what he wants. Mathis was unhappy […]
