Julian Edelman returns to Patriots

April 10, 2013 by Mike Dussault

The receiver news keeps coming this morning as Mike Garafalo reports Julian Edelman has re-signed with the Pats on a one-year deal. Makes sense that Edelman didn’t jump at a one-year deal earlier in the offseason, and waited to see what else might be out there.

Clearly he has to prove he can stay healthy, but the Pats now could have some decent competition depth at receiver. Still think they need to add a young explosive talent in the draft, but for now the Pats have a pretty good 2013 team in place that should only improve with the draft picks.

As always, the won’t be restricted by needs and can just take the best player available. Classic Patriots. Classic.

Re-setting the Patriots defensive tackle competition – Going Deep – Boston.com

Re-setting the Patriots defensive tackle competition – Going Deep – Boston.com

Nice round-up from Frenz, taking a look at the Pats current defensive tackle depth. One wild card is Myron Pryor. Granted he hasn’t played a snap since early 2011, but if he’s healthy he could be an interesting addition in an area of need. Always liked his pass rush and ability to play inside, even against the run.

Patriots make a move on Emmanuel Sanders

April 10, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Per Jason LaCanfora the Pats just signed Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to an offer sheet. The cap-strung Steelers will now have to decide if they want to match, if they even can.

For the Pats it’s a bold move. They only have five draft picks and this will cost them their third rounder, but it will add a player at their biggest area of need. Without any glaring needs left, and only four picks (1st, 2nd, 7th, 7th) remaining, it seems even more likely the Pats could trade down from the first round to pick up some more picks.

Stay tuned, this should be one of the most interesting non-draft weeks of the offseason!

The Patriots just submitted an offer sheet on Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders. some actual restricted free agent movement. Wow

And just for old time’s sake here’s another of Mike Dussault, Pass Rusher Un-Extraordinaire. That’s me in the middle again, head-up on the guard, about to be completely stonewalled, and likely thrown to the ground, by number 68 in blue. I remember just wanting the game to be over at halftime during this one. Granted I was a 195-pound tackle who played both ways, and all special teams (we were really, really bad and barely had enough guys for a team). Let’s just say I enjoy blogging about football far more than I liked playing.

Hockey on the other hand… that’s a story for another day.

A fond farewell to the Vermont Academy football program. I’m surprised my horrible defensive tackle play (shown above in the middle in white, getting completely blocked out of the play  by #68) didn’t cause the demise sooner. I didn’t do the Wildcat football tradition any justice, but always sad to see the end of a team with history going back to the early 1900’s.

All of us here at Vermont Academy are proud of our storied football history. We will always cherish that very special tradition and honor alumni who played on those great teams. Vermont Academy has been blessed with great coaches – such as John Lucy, Bob Harrington and others – and players over the years, but like all individuals and institutions that look to grow and develop, we have to make this decision at this time.

(no title)

One reason for New England to sign veteran Marcus Stroud to play defensive end in their 3-4 scheme right before the lockout was the added flexibility he gives the team, on the field and on the draft board. That spot is a need area for the Patriots. So by getting a stop-gap player, there’s now […]
