Steelers match Patriots offer to Emmanuel Sanders

Per Sanders’ agent, the Steelers have matched the Patriots offer and will retain the wide receiver. This certainly puts the pressure back on the Pats to draft at least one impact wide receiver in the draft, and they should probably take a swing at two just to be safe. There’s no much left on the free agency market, and at this point, it certainly seems possible that Brandon Lloyd could make a return appearance.

With roughly 48 hours left to make a decision, the Pittsburgh Steelers are “50-50” on whether or not to match the one year, $2.5 million offer sheet the Patriots extended to restricted free agent wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton reports.

Overall, while Sanders was an inside player for the Steelers, his skill set would indicate an outside “x” receiver role for the Patriots. He can do a lot of things Brandon Lloyd did, but better and faster. With Wallace and Antonio Brown on the outside – both are more explosive than Sanders – there wasn’t a need for him outside. But for the Patriots, he could fill that role. That being said, Sanders’ immense versatility could allow him to play anywhere – even Aaron Hernandez’s role as a hybrid TE/WR in case of injury.

Patriots make a move on Emmanuel Sanders

Per Jason LaCanfora the Pats just signed Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to an offer sheet. The cap-strung Steelers will now have to decide if they want to match, if they even can.

For the Pats it’s a bold move. They only have five draft picks and this will cost them their third rounder, but it will add a player at their biggest area of need. Without any glaring needs left, and only four picks (1st, 2nd, 7th, 7th) remaining, it seems even more likely the Pats could trade down from the first round to pick up some more picks.

Stay tuned, this should be one of the most interesting non-draft weeks of the offseason!

Smart play for the Patriots is to wait here. Unless some other team swoops in on Sanders, they really have no reason to do anything just yet. 

Pittsburgh has holes to fill this offseason, and the Patriots (if they are still interested in Sanders) could be waiting for the Steelers to make other roster moves, which would further limit their cap space and ability to match an offer.
