29. New England Patriots: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia. Even if the Pats do re-sign Wes Welker (and Tom Brady’s recent contract re-do certainly has them in line to do just that), there’s a clear need for speed in New England’s offense. Bill Belichick has the tight end position sewn up like no other, and Welker takes care of the slot. But that doesn’t challenge safeties deep, and if there’s one thing Austin can do with his cartoonish speed and agility in space, it’s that. Putting him in this system, with that quarterback, might be almost unfair.

As it stands, the Patriots are planning to go with Devin McCourty and Tavon Wilson as the starting safeties and they have a strong belief in the duo. The team has confidence that Wilson progressed enough last season, and will take the expected leap to Year 2. However, it can’t be discounted that the team really has other plans at safety — league sources believe the Patriots will try for Ed Reed of the Ravens at about $5 million per season.

Vis-a-Vis Wallace: It’s also worth noting that the type of receiver he is doesn’t tend to have a long shelf life. He’s not a big physical freak like a Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson. He’s undersized and speedy, does most of his damage between the 20s etc. He’s not a great route runner and once he loses that first step he’s going to be very limited. Moss can play with diminished speed because his height/reach make him impossible to cover.

The NFL Combine In Gifs

vuemix:

Ahhh the NFL combine. When prospective pro athletes get trotted out onto a field in nothing but tight spandex and try as hard as they can to impress groups of old men.

They jump

Run really, really fast

Rub their legs?

Prance like girly men?

Any chance the Pats go after Mike Wallace?

February 27, 2013 by Mike Dussault

I’ve just never seen it with Mike Wallace. Pittsburgh has a notoriously simple offense, where Wallace would do nothing more than run fast down the field and catch the ball. Things are far from that simple in New England. Receivers need to get to the line, read the defense and determine one of as many as three routes Brady will want them to run.

Instead of spending all that money on another free agent WR who may or may not “get it”, I think the Pats need to go after one in the draft. There should be plenty of them available that fit the mold (like Justin Hunter who I mocked to them in my latest mock draft today). It’s a safer move financially, and it will allow the Pats to develop the receiver from the ground up so to speak.
