Bruschi’s Breakdown — New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills – ESPN Boston

The Patriots, from a coaching staff standpoint, have to be all-encompassing because there is a lot of mystery to a new team that is coming out with a new quarterback, a new head coach, a new philosophy, a new energy. So you have to be ready for everything in terms of hurry-up offense, new formations, personnel groupings and motions and new defensive wrinkles that you haven’t seen in the preseason. There’s no real book on this head coach or coaching staff working together. So this can be a huge sideline adjustment game for the Patriots because of that mystery. Once the game plan is recognized by the Patriots coaching staff in the first quarter, then the adjustments can be made.

‘Fragile’ label doesn’t really fit Danny Amendola – Sports – The Boston Globe

‘Fragile’ label doesn’t really fit Danny Amendola – Sports – The Boston Globe

Enjoyed this one with a closer look at Danny Amendola and the preconceptions about his injury history.

That’s why the “fragile” label bugs Amendola so much. Yes, he has played only 16 games once in four NFL seasons (he also played in all 14 games after being signed by St. Louis off Philadelphia’s practice squad in Week 3 of 2009). It’s not as though he refuses to play on sprained ankles or with minor dings. His injuries have been freakish and painful.

The sub-package pass rushing role will likely come down to Joe Vellano, A.J. Francis, Jake Bequette and Michael Buchanan. Vellano is the only player we’ve seen this summer playing at the three-technique defensive tackle spot, but for the past two years Bill Belichick has used a defensive end. Jermaine Cunningham, Marcus Benard and Justin Francis all played the position this summer. All three guys are gone.

Q: What will be some of your biggest challenges and how will you overcome them given that you are missing some of your familiar security blankets?

TB: Well there are always challenges to determine really what kind of team you are going to be. Like I said, the mental toughness, the work ethic, the core principles and fundamentals of the game have not been tested under game conditions. They’ve been tested in preseason, in practice and workouts, but nothing is like the games. Especially when there are 70,000 people in the stands, they’re televised and there are millions of people watching on TV. That’s where you see the best of the best. That’s what it is all about. We all are excited to see where we are at. There is obviously a lot of room for improvement, and hopefully we’ll try to improve throughout the course of the season. That’s what it takes to be a successful team in the NFL.
