The Truth About BB’s Draft DBs Hurts (CHFF)

The Truth About BB’s Draft DBs Hurts (CHFF)

I can’t argue with the Cold Hard Football Facts in this article. But if the Defensive Passer Rating of 78 is indeed a benchmark the 2009 Patriots really weren’t too far off the mark (81) despite some horrific performances against the Saints and Colts. In fact, that 81 DPR would rank 5th behind the 4 teams that played in the Super Bowl and the 2006 team that lost in the AFC Championship. So take this all with a grain of salt, we ain’t that far away.

This draft has question marks attached to talented players all over the place. They drafted Devin McCourty CB Rutgers who is talented but football maturity on the field is his question mark. If Rob Gronkowski TE Arizona’s back is all right then they have drafted one of the best TE’s in this draft. Jermaine Cunningham DE/LB Florida is another very talented player with a host of question marks off and on the field and Brandon Spikes LB Florida has some athletic question marks but in his defense he knows what he is doing on the field. Taylor Price WR Ohio who I know that he can block but how long will it take for him to become a complete WR? Aaron Hernandez TE/H-Back might be one of the steals of the draft and Tom Brady should love him at crunch time. Did you notice how this team is always in the running for the playoffs and draft’s from big time college programs? I just thought I would bring that to your attention! Lots of question marks but not about talent. They drafted talent from big programs that addressed their needs.
A smart draft if the question marks can be answered.

I came across this Kent State intervew with Julian Edelman last year, before we knew if he’d be anything more than training camp fodder. Let’s just say it still kills me everytime… from the Glory soundtrack, to the strange Zoolander face Edelman’s making through the whole thing, not to mention some pretty sick highlights. It’s an entertaining 3 minutes.

Brandon Spikes has elite size for the position and does a great job of delivering an absolutely devastating punch on contact. He knows how to fill run lanes and stack at the point of attack. He’s a powerful wrap-up tackler who gets to the football in a hurry and consistently gets his man to the ground. Spikes is a team leader in every sense of the word. He’s a motivated defender who plays every snap until the whistle, and he’s a guy whose teammates seem to rally around him. He does a nice job reading his run/pass keys quickly and gets a good jump on the ball. Spikes showcases fluidity in his drop and knows how to read the quarterback’s eyes and then to jump pass routes. At times, he has a tendency to freelance, and he will take himself out of plays at the line of scrimmage. But he does a good job rushing the passer from the outside and will line up as a nickel rusher on third down. He has a good first step but is still learning how to use his hands.
