One theme that was echoed by many head coaches and personnel executives over the past few days at the NFL combine is how football has changed in recent years. More passing means the game is being played more in space on defense. Some teams are in their sub defense, with five or six defensive backs on the field, almost 70 percent of the time. This places an added premium on athletes up front who can help disrupt the opposing offense through pressure.

“I talked to someone well connected in the league who said that the Patriots o-line is the most cohesive and best-coached unit in the NFL. And now that you just said that, it would make perfect sense, in that Mankins is playing with a different guy on his right throughout the season, that will have a meaningful impact on both his play and the lines play. “I don’t think Mankins makes a lot of mental mistakes. But if you pair him with a center, and there’s no unit on the field that has to work together more than the o-line, and particularly when a quarterback sets the protection and there’s 15 seconds left on the play clock … I think that’s a very fair statement.”

Overall, it is always impressive to see some of the biggest players in the draft display their athleticism. Memphis’ Dontari Poe, who measured 6-foot-4 and weighed in at 346 pounds, probably helped his stock more than anyone. He ran a 4.98 time in the 40. Poe is the type of athletic, big-bodied prospect that I would imagine the Patriots would be interested in, but after his performance today, it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s selected before the Patriots are on the clock at 27.

Poe and Cox are a couple of my early favorites for the Pats, but after today’s combine performances they both might be gone by 27th overall.

I think New England’s a candidate for the fifth straight draft to take a corner in the top two rounds … The hip rehab of New England cornerback Ras-I Dowling is going very well. He’ll be ready for most if not all of his offseason work

Robert Griffin III’s combine performance makes No. 2 NFL Draft pick a valuable one – Peter King – SI.com

Good news on Ras-I.

Correction: Not sure how I got it in my head Ras-I’s injury bug only started his junior year but that info was incorrect. Here’s the accurate injury history:

Problems in regards to injury history. Played just five games in 2010 because of a left ankle fracture, hamstring pull and right knee injury. In 08 he dealt with a hamstring and back injury. Started all 12 games in 09. Pulled a hamstring at the combine but had a great pro day. Had a broken hand and a knee injury in high school.

So yeah, who knows if he can stay healthy…
