Welker has averaged better than 110 catches annually since joining New England in 2007 and has led the NFL in that category three times during that stretch; franchising him is a no-brainer if no new deal is reached by Monday. QB Tom Brady also loves Branch, but we’d prioritize acrobatic deep threat Brandon Lloyd – he played for new/old Pats OC Josh McDaniels in Denver and St. Louis the past two years – before focusing on Branch, a 10-year vet. Forget that Carter is one of the nicest guys in the league, he reverted to a double-digit sack guy after Bill Belichick adapted the defense to a 4-3 base to maximize Carter’s talents as a pass-rushing end. Keep him. However it’s worth noting New England has missed on several defensive backs in recent years despite investing numerous picks. It may be time to consider CB Carlos Rogers or S Dashon Goldson and find pass rushers and/or wideouts in the draft.

Many would argue safety is New England’s biggest need, and it’s certainly a valid debate. However, the reason I put cornerback over safety is because corner is more valuable in today’s NFL. In my opinion, cornerback is the second-hardest position to play behind quarterback. You take the corner over the elite safety every time. But there’s no avoiding New England’s need at safety. Patrick Chung is a good, young player who needs someone next to him to take the pressure off on the back end. This is a great year for safeties in free agency. Therefore, New England could have this need filled before the draft.

I would argue Safety is our biggest need.

File this one under “Things everyone totally saw coming”. Get him down to around the vet minimum (I bet he’d take it) and let him compete in camp and show if he’s picked anything up. They’re not going to get anything for him via trade, and it’s not like they have a ton of great depth at WR. As long as his salary is manageable I don’t see a downside for at least keeping him around until camp. If he still isn’t getting it you can easily cut him.

In this division right now, I’d say that Buffalo is a better team than the New York Jets,” King said. “I think the Patriots are better than the Bills, so I don’t see the Patriots having a lot of trouble winning this division this year, but the whole question is, that hasn’t been their biggest […]
