Love (6-1, 315) is more of a 3-4 nose tackle type than a penetrator, while Deaderick (6-4, 305) fits a little bit of a different profile – he’s played 3-4 end and also has the flexibility to penetrate at times as a 4-3 tackle. Adding to the group has been a priority for the Patriots this offseason, and Kelly’s potential contirbutions as an interior penetrator would provide a boost.

At this point I don’t just feel like I’m beating a dead horse, I feel like I’ve dropped a bomb on the entire stable.

Tommy Kelly is one of the best defensive linemen in the league. He’s an outstanding player,” Belichick said at the time. “Kelly plays everywhere. He’s a little bit like Howie Long in that Howie Long was a guy that they would move along on the front. They would take Howie and mismatch him against whoever they thought the other team’s worst lineman was. There is a little bit of that with Tommy Kelly too, find a guy that they want to go after and stick him there because he does have the flexibility to play outside and inside. He can pretty much play across the board. He can do everything. Play the run, rush the passer, he’s good in pursuit. He’s a very physical player. He’s pretty good.

Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots have signed Raiders defensive lineman Tommy Kelly to a two-year deal. Classic Patriots move, signing another Raider castoff to bolster their depth along the defensive line.

The biggest impact of Kelly coming aboard will be his ability to take some of the load off of Vince Wilfork. At 6-foot-6, 325 pounds he adds some good size. He hasn’t missed a game since 2007, and despite just one sack in 2012 he had 7.5 in 2011 and 7 in 2010.

As everyone knows, I’ve been beating the defensive tackle drum all offseason and this is a good step, but I’d still love to see them get another defense tackle in the draft.

But this signing makes it even more likely they could go wide receiver in round one.

One of the most interesting parts of that discussion was Bruschi pointing out one of the moments he realized he was no longer himself prior to his decision to retire. He mentioned that it came while he was viewing a “splice of film” where he watched himself perform during a drill during the 2009 training camp that was similar to one he had also done back in 2004. After watching the two Bruschi said of the 2004 version of himself, “Man, that guy’s good,” whereas after seeing the 2009 footage his thoughts were, “Man, that guy’s slow.”

I’m going to love having Adrian Wilson here just because since I’ve been here we haven’t had that one 10-year vet (in the secondary) or that guy that’s played a long time and been productive,” McCourty said. “I think the closest thing we had like that was my rookie year when we had guys like (Brandon) Meriweather, James Sanders and Leigh Bodden. "It will be cool just to have that veteran presence in our locker room and our defensive back room, so I’m looking forward to learning a lot from him.

In the glory days, the patriots had 2 of the nastiest/dirtiest defenders with Seymour and Harrison. What guys on this years team have that intimidation factor, that swag?

Spikes for sure, think Hightower can develop it as well. Adrian Wilson should bring something to the party this year as well. There’s a fine line between having intimidators, and just having idiots who launch at people (cough Meriweather). I do think in general the Patriots have a pretty physical defense, albeit not one that […]
