5 Biggest Questions the Patriots Must Answer Before the 2014 NFL Playoffs | Bleacher Report

Nice job summing up the issues by James Christensen here. Maybe the Pats will get luck and their first playoff opponent will play sloppy. That always means a Pats win.

Who you think New Englands gonna extend first Aqib Talib or Julian Edelman? i think the obvious is edleman but talib is so clutch idrk

Yeah, this will be the big debate as soon as the season ends until free agency starts. I expect both of them to test the market, but I’d think teams might be a little spooked by Edelman being raised by New England, not many of those players have gone on to duplicate their success elsewhere.

Teams that would be interested in Talib might want to make sure they have a good locker room in place. In a football-first environment like the Patriots, he’s done well. Somewhere else, where there are a lot of sideshows might make for a different Talib.

But if you have to choose one, I think the answer is pretty easy. How hard is it to find a slot receiver, especially when the Pats are already paying Danny Amendola a pretty good chunk of change?

And then, how hard is it to find a #1 corner?

I’d love to keep both but I think Talib has to be the priority if push comes to shove.

For what it’s worth, as we explained here, history tells us that teams who play closer games over the course of the regular season tend to do better when the playoffs roll around. Six of the last 10 Super Bowl winners had an average margin of victory of eight points or less, while on the other end of the spectrum, only two of the Super Bowl winners in that span had an average margin of victory of 10 points or better.

If Amendola came down with this then the words “helmet catch” might have been less painful in New England.

As someone who’s not familiar with the X’s and O’s of the game, I’m reading Bedard and others comment on how our corners are giving up too much space to receivers off the line of scrimmage – thinking back to Torrey Smith’s red zone TD in week 3 – and how the Pats seemingly refuse to revise that approach in coverage. Do you think it’s a product of BB not adjusting his game to modern O or a deeper philosophy permitting short-yardage gains vs. the deep ball? Maddening to watch at times.

Excellent question and yes, absolutely maddening to watch at times. I think it’s fair to question this tactic, and I don’t really have a good answer for why they continue to run this off-man style of coverage at times. The simplest guess is that it’s part of the bend-don’t-break style the Pats have been fond […]
