Great stats from Doug Kyed. Nice improvement this year, and really shows how well Devin McCourty has done on the back end.

Check out how the Patriots stack up this season on deep passes compared to the past two years below.

2013: 26-84, 30.9%, 9.25 YPA, 777 yards, 5 TDs, 6 INTs, 4 pass interference penalties

2012: 35-88, 39.8%, 12.1 YPA, 1,067 yards, 12 TDs, 9 INTs, 4 pass interference penalties

2011: 39-78, 50%, 15.7 YPA, 1,226 yards, 6 TDs, 3 INTs, 5 pass interference penalties

Why is Matthew Slater a Pro Bowl special teamer? His tackle on punt returner Jacoby Jones (8:21 remaining) is one example. Slater worked away from a double-team at the line of scrimmage (Chykie Brown/Jeromy Miles) and outran everyone up the middle of the field, located the ball, took a perfect angle and broke down perfectly from a full-sprint to bring down Jones after just 2 yards – fighting through a stiff-arm. It doesn’t get any better than that.

why are analysts so short sighted? why do they focus so much on numbers without looking at the context? they seem to never learn. they make mock drafts only have to guys with great numbers becomes busts and then they give the quarterback with the best numbers the MVP award. they never seem to consider the supporting cast surrounding the qb and the quality of teams he faced

It’s the problem with trying to predict what will happen. No one really knows for sure and while there are certainly things you look for in scouting a player, whether or not he puts it all together, clicks with the quarterback, etc. is up to what’s inside him.

Upsets will always be what makes sports great, but they’re only upsets when all the “analysts” pick a favorite.
