What stands out when evaluating Ryan is his aggressive, physical style of play. He is unafraid to engage a wide receiver at the line of scrimmage to knock him off of his route, and he is an aggressive run defender with an edge-setting mentality. Patriots cornerbacks are asked to ably defend the run (Kyle Arrington and Devin McCourty, previously a cornerback, are both solid run defenders), and Ryan’s style of play should fit in in that sense. He has good ball skills and anticipation to disrupt the football at the point of catch. He has good pattern-read skills and anticipation. The lack of top end speed hurts Ryan as a perimeter cornerback in man-to-man coverage, as bigger defenders who can leverage him have a chance to break free.
By far the biggest problem with him was his pass protection. His 97.1 Pass Blocking Efficiency was fourth-lowest among centers. The difference between him and the league’s best center was roughly one pressure per game — which really isn’t much when weighed against his impact in the run game — and he never gave up more than three pressures in a game, so his pass blocking was never a huge problem. I’m also willing to look past his pass blocking due to his improvement. In his first 469 pass blocks he allowed six sacks, a QB hit and 12 hurries. In his last 483 he got that down to zero sacks, one hit and eight hurries.

According to a source familiar with the case, Gronkowski is going to need a fourth operation to change the plate that’s securing the broken bone in the forearm. While there has been some suggestion recently that this step might be avoided, the source indicated the fourth operation still has to happen. The plate has to be switched, no matter what, and the surrounding tissue tested. The real question is if Gronkowski, who has been taking part in the team’s offseason program, will need a fifth operation. If tests show the infection has been completely flushed out, the plate will be replaced, and the recovery process begins. If there are still signs of infection, that won’t happen.

Wish there was some mention of Tommy Kelly/Armond Armstead in here, but as usual it’s the defensive ends and linebackers that get all the pass rush glory.
New England’s lack of a pass rush has been even more of a constant thread over the past several years than poor secondary play: The Patriots pass rush finished 23rd in Adjusted Sack Rate last year, and hasn’t ranked higher than 15th since 2007. What’s more, all they’ve done to address this is over the past two seasons has been to draft defensive end Chandler Jones last year and outside linebacker Jamie Collins this April. Both Jones and Collins ranked among the top five pass-rushing prospects of their draft classes according to our SackSEER projections in 2012 and 2013, so it’s not like we’re down on the specific players New England has added. It’s just important to keep in mind that Jones only had six sacks in 13 starts last year, and Collins has recent NFL history working against him.
According to NFL sources, Patriots receiver Julian Edelman is in a walking boot after reinjuring his right foot. It was a break in his right foot that led to the 26-year-old being placed on injured reserve in December. Edelman will miss the on-field organized team activities New England is holding in the coming weeks; one source said there is an outside chance he will be able to participate in minicamp June 11-13, but it would be on a limited basis.
