The ankle is doing just fine. That’s what Bill Belichick told the assembled media in his final press conference of Super Bowl week when he said that tight end Rob Gronkowski had not suffered any setbacks after practicing on a limited basis Thursday for the first time in almost two weeks. “I think he was OK this morning,” Belichick said. “I don’t think we had any setbacks. We’ll see how it goes out there today. Rob’s worked extremely hard, he’s gotten treatment morning, noon and night and he’s gotten better on a daily basis. Hopefully he’ll be able to continue that same progress today, tomorrow and all day Sunday, and we’ll see where that takes us. "But I think he’s coming along. We’ll just have to see where he gets to. But certainly moving in the right direction. He’s getting better on a daily basis.”
If Sebastian Vollmer is able to contribute, after missing multiple games with a back ailment, a 3 TE / 2 WR set featuring Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, and Nate Solder as the inline blocker could be a devastating force. If the Giants go to their nickel defense, the Patriots can motion Hernandez into the backfield and run the ball. The TE/RB combination has been extremely lethal, leaving defenses unable to ascertain what sort of personnel grouping is truly on the field. If the Giants keep their base defense in, Brady has weapons on the field to attack with and six offensive linemen to protect him. Expect to see the Patriots offense go into the hurry-up if they can catch the Giants defense in the personnel group that they want.

Matt Patricia cracks a funny to BB about the Patriots defense as they warm up for the Colts game. At least they had a sense of humor about it, eh?

From thumb to pinkie, Gronkowski’s hands measure 10 ¾ inches — nearly as long as a football. “Probably about two of mine,” Patriots running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis said. “I mean, you’ve got to see those things. They’re like oven mitts.”

Behind Belichick’s demeanor is the belief that everything you need to know is something you can glean from watching a game. The actual outcome of play is enough to settle almost any debate, and those that can’t—arguments about clutchness, leadership, or poise—are hopelessly subjective. Perhaps this accounts for his sunniness this week, which is basically the football argument week. Every topic can be spun into endless comparisons and appeals to subjectivity. Anyone can win on any given Sunday, so sometimes that can mean that the best team doesn’t.
