wes welker

July 16, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Maybe this is why the Pats didn’t give Welker an extension? I kid of course.

Look, we all love watching Welker play, and with the number of receivers the Pats have developed over the years there’s no question there’s some risk should the Pats lose Welker after this year, which at this point seems probable, BUT….

There is no denying that receivers start to lose it after age thirty. Couple that with Welker’s penchant for taking huge hits where he makes his living in the middle of the field and it’s easy to see why the Pats might balk at giving him a monstrous long term contract. The risk that Welker is not the same player within the next two years is considerable and it’s not like the Pats give out big, long-term contracts anyways.

The Patriots offense is going to be built for the long-term around Gronk, and really, if you had to choose between Welker and Hernandez as the complimentary piece who are going to put your money into? To be honest I’m not even sure the lack of Welker long term deal means a long term one for Hernando next off-season, but it’s clear Welker is the riskier investment.

It’s always tough when it comes to the Pats, players we have grown to love and contracts, but the front office in Foxboro doesn’t let nostalgia get in the way of their offers. They continue to do things with a long term outlook, and ultimately that’s the thing that has kept them winning over the past decade, not loyalty to great players who have been a blast to watch.

It’s unfortunate, but it just goes to show that we should all enjoy this year of Brady and Welker together, it might not ever happen again. And that’s okay.

The feeling is that there’s too much ground to make up to get a deal done by the 4 p.m. deadline later today,” Schefer says. “It doesn’t look like there will be a long-term deal for Wes Welker. I don’t think he expects one, I don’t think the Patriots expect one. That doesn’t prevent the two sides from revisiting the topic today, as they will. But it will not be easy to get that deal done.

I really wasn’t holding out much hope for a long term deal getting done.

The deadline for the Patriots and franchise player Wes Welker to get a longer-term deal done is next Monday at 4 p.m., and after a time when it looked like a longshot something might get done, now things are starting to look up. While the two sides have been in different places as far as guaranteed money, it is believed that the main hurdle is a third year and how to structure it. The Patriots have been reluctant to go to a three-year deal with the 31-year old receiver, who in five seasons with New England has recorded 554 catches, just three shy of the franchise record set by Troy Brown over 15 years. Via a league source, it is expected that the two sides will be working hard this week toward getting a deal done.

You’re talking about a distance in the range of around $6 million in guaranteed money. That’s not to say the sides can’t agree. The Patriots could very well give in a little bit at the end. Essentially what they will be asking themselves is this: What kind of year do we think Welker will have? If the Patriots feel he will repeat his terrific production of a year ago or close to it, then right now they need to figure out what they would do after this season. Welker led the league, by a wide margin, with 122 receptions, and was second to Calvin Johnson of the Lions with 1,569 yards. If Welker, 31, comes close to that in 2012, are the Patriots prepared to let him walk, perhaps to a team like the Jets, and go forward with some assortment of Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch, Jabar Gaffney, and Donte’ Stallworth? If they are, then let Welker play out the tag and bid him adieu. He’s not going to sign a team-friendly deal after another standout season.

Time running out for Welker/Pats to come to a long term agreement. As much as I enjoy watching Wes play and think he deserves a great deal, you can’t fault the Pats for playing it safe with him. We all know how much Welker gets lit up, and who knows how long he’ll be able to continue to bounce up after every vicious hit he takes.

An on the Jets, of course none of us want to see him go there but is it really like Welker is the missing piece for them? It would be just another classic “let’s bring in a high priced free agent and totally retard Jeremy Kerley’s development” move. I would’ve been more worried about them getting Logan Mankins.

Wes Welker needs four catches in the season opener to become the Patriots’ all-time leader in receptions. Troy Brown’s 557 catches is currently the top mark, a total that took 15 seasons to accumulate (1993-2007). Welker enters his sixth season with the Patriots in 2012, making the imminent accomplishment that much more impressive.

I don’t sense any real motivation to get this extended. The Patriots seem perfectly fine with the talented, but older, receiver playing out the tag. While Welker, clearly, would like a little more money and security from a longer deal, I don’t see it happening now after all this time. He loves being a Patriot and playing with Tom Brady, and the sides could always work out a new deal down the line, and in the meantime he gets roughly $10 million. Sources with knowledge of this negotiation have believed for months that Welker would end up playing 2012 on the tag and that became even more clear when he signed it and joined offseason work a while back. It would take a fairly drastic turn of events to get off that track now.

Tweets of Note: 2020 Camp -#5 8/21

The week has flown by and Friday’s practice has now been and gone. A lighter session today in just shells and helmets, probably a good thing given how big the absent list has grown over the last few days. Here’s today’s Tweets of Note. Now, this wasn’t something I was expecting, Stidham looks to have […]
