Who stood out in 1-on-1 drills – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Who stood out in 1-on-1 drills – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Like that Reiss is focusing on the pass rush drills, and here are his two decisive victories Tuesday.

DE Marcus Benard – He could have the quickest first step among the backup DEs, which was seen as he used his speed to race around G Markus Zusevics in a flash. Later, when OT Sebastian Vollmer got his hands on him initially, he couldn’t generate a counter move to shake free.

DT Joe Vellano – Shaded on center Chris McDonald (1 technique), he displayed a suddenness at the snap that seemed to surprise McDonald as he surged past him.

Meanwhile, Jake Bequette continues to not get much notice. Seems to me he’s fading fast, even behind Cunningham. Benard could lock up the DPR role, with Cunningham taking the top interior rusher spot again (until Armstead is healthy maybe), or perhaps Forston or Vellano make a push.

After struggling in practice on Monday, his 25th birthday, rookie receiver Kenbrell Thompkins was arguably the best player on the field Tuesday, making several noteworthy grabs and showing precise route running. Thompkins both stretched the field vertically and impressed with his underneath route running. His ability to set up defenders in press coverage with nimble footwork at the line of scrimmage continues to stand out. Cornerback Aqib Talib recently lauded his ability to release off the line.

Great stuff throughout Yates’ observations, including a mention of Danny Amendola’s ability to stretch a defense, a skill that wasn’t Welker’s strong suit.

Tweets of Note from Tuesday’s Patriots Practice

July 30, 2013 by Mike Dussault

No Dobson today, and although he was spotted on the sideline every day missed is tough to make up. Hopefully with tomorrow’s day off, he’ll be able to get back out there asap.

#ChandlerJones aligned as a legit 5 tech DE in base 3-4. If he can hold up, thrive at that size, at that position vs. reg runs…impressive

— Matt Chatham (@chatham58) July 30, 2013

Dobson is out on the field watching practice. Walking gingerly, seems to be favoring right leg, but doesn’t appear too serious

— Ben Volin (@BenVolin) July 30, 2013

Thompkins just caught a deep sideline bomb from Brady. Went up between Logan Ryan & Devin McCourty to grab it. Spiked the ball to celebrate

— Derek Havens (@PatriotsHaven) July 30, 2013

Brady throws for Zach Sudfeld in the back corner of the end zone. Sudfeld comes up with the one-handed grab. Crowd goes wild.

Danny Amendola is far and away, not even close, the best WR on the field.

— Doug Kyed (@DougKyedNESN) July 30, 2013

Ridley and Arrington got into a mini scrap at the end of practice to close out the day. Arrington popped Ridley and Rid retaliated.

New England Patriots practice notes: Ras-I Dowling bounces back, Aqib Talib shines | masslive.com

Notes on last night from Nick Underhill, he was high on Ras-I:

After a rough day Sunday, cornerback Ras-I Dowling bounced back with a better performance Monday. Had one blatant pass interference infraction, but thought he did a much better job in coverage. Aqib Talib owned the day, though. He started out by intercepting a pass intended for Michael Jenkins and finished up by taking one away from Kenbrell Thompkins.

Patriots camp observations: WRs coming along under Brady – CBSSports.com

Patriots camp observations: WRs coming along under Brady – CBSSports.com

Great stuff from Pat Kirwan, whose opinion I trust, including this:

The starting front four looks good with Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones at the ends and Tommy Kelly and Vince Wilfork inside. The problems start when you look to the roster for quality depth and a hybrid ‘joker’ player that will stress opposing quarterbacks. Justin Francis, a defensive end out of Rutgers, is a dark horse to become a factor in the pass rush according to his teammates I spoke with Sunday. It may take some time, but rookie Jamie Collins has a chance to be a hybrid linebacker/pass rusher.

Stevan Ridley, Ras-I Dowling struggle in first day of contact drills | masslive.com

Another big day for wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins and Kamar Aiken. Both players got off the line well and made several nice plays. Thompkins has been used almost exclusively on the outside, while Aiken has lined up both on the inside and outside. Aiken had a nice back-shoulder catch during one-on-one drills. Probably rookie Josh Boyce’s best practice. He runs crisp routes, got off the line well and had flashed better hands after dropping a few passes Saturday. He’s received snaps at all three receiver spots.
