Patriots Rookie Eye Ball Test #6: Taylor Price

Like cornerbacks, there aren’t really a whole lot of different ways you can go as a receiver. I’m pretty happy with Price’s overall look, the standard WR/DB facemask, the #17… all in all he looks like an NFL WR to me.

Of course under the helmet is a whole different story with tweeps like @xxBeantownBabyxx already dubbing him the new Patriot they’d most like to stalk. So I think it’s fair to say that Price passes the Eye Ball Test both on the field and off.

Patriots Rookie Eye Ball Test #5: Aaron Hernandez

Solid. Not flashy, but solid. I’m still not sold on #46 but it’s a little different so I kinda like it. Because it seems like Hernandez is gonna be a little different Tight End. I get the feeling he’s gonna be groomed as a big security blanket for TB12. Line him up in the slot, and let him pick up first downs like Welker usually does (and will do again).

I really don’t think you can understate how much having two new big targets will help Tom Brady. For all the talk of “we need wide receivers”, what we really need are reliable targets who can get open, especially in tight quarters. I think Hernandez (who really needs a nickname) and Gronk will really help, especially in the red zone.

Patriots Rookie Eyeball Test #4: Brandon Spikes

Now this is what I’m talking about. Look at Spikes! Flashing his 5.09 40 speed, hair flying… I love it. Great look top to bottom. Doesn’t look like your usual ILB, he’s got the same facemask style that Gronk was rocking and I am a fan. It’s pretty clear this guy is going to be a fan favorite. Order your #55 jerseys now, folks.

By all accounts by the media, there was something special about Spikes today when he spoke. I think we’re going to see another Patriots Dynasty Defense built around Brandon and Mayo. We’re one ferocious pass rushing OLB away right now.

Patriots Rookie Eyeball Test #3: Jermaine Cunningham

Oh man, Jermaine. No. No. No. Does he really expect anyone to believe he’s our pass rusher of the future with a look like that? Yesterday I posted a picture of Jermaine at Florida and he looked frightening.

Now? He looks like someone headed for the practice squad.  Not gonna lie, it’s all in the facemask for me. Say what you will about Adalius Thomas but he looked scary in uniform. Jermaine just ain’t cutting it here. Let’s hope he hears my pleas and switches up the helmet. Let’s get back to the Florida look, Jermaine!

Patriots Rookie Eye Ball Test #2: Devin McCourty

I have to admit with a cornerback it’s really black or white. You either look like a pro corner (see Darius Butler, Bodden, even Wilhite) or you don’t (see Terrence Wheatley). It’s pretty clear to me that McCourty has, in the words of Roxette, got the look.

Usually I prefer my #32s to be white runningbacks like Craig James, so a corner with a number in the 30s is a little bit of a twist. We’ll see if he keeps it or if he switches up to say #22 after training camp (sorry Wheaties). Of course McCourty already changed his twitter handle to reflect #32 so maybe he plans on keeping it.

Solid overall look. Let’s hope he’s the next Darrelle Bevis. Yes, Bevis. I’m sick of everyone referring to Bevis as the cornerback Jesus, so from here on out he will be referred to as Bevis, the Great Cornerholio.

And here it is, our first glimpse of a 2010 New England Patriots rookie, Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski. I really have high hopes for Gronk and after seeing this picture I am even more excited.

Why you may ask? Because I’ve been waiting for a Patriot to rock one of those new high-tech facemasks for a while now and I think Gronk is just the man to pull it off. It’s a new look for a new decade but a new player who will be the new benchmark for what a versatile Tight End is.

As for him being #87 I don’t see how you can’t love it. We all remember when Ben “Winter” Coates was the franchise. Gronk can block. Gronk can catch. He’s going to be a Patriot beast for the next decade. Exciting!
