Reiss: Five Games, Four Different Defensive Lines

The defensive line was one of the biggest question marks coming into the 2010 season. The only constant has been Vince Wilfork dominating from any of the three positions he plays.

Gerard Warren has been a great addition. I’d love to see the Patriots lock him up past this season. He’s a big, mean, intimidating presence.

Mike Wright can fill in when needed but really his specialty is interior pass rush.

Brandon Deaderick has seemingly surpassed Ron Brace, we’ll see if that continues this weekend. I don’t think they’ve given up on Brace just yet.

Not to look past this year but a front of Ty Warren – Wilfork – Gerard Warren would be pretty formidable. Who knows maybe even Deaderick could surpass Gerard if he continues to develop.

CHFF: Power Ranking – Pats #3

I never really post power rankings because I think they’re just stupid exercises. It really doesn’t matter who ranks where right now. What matters is what team peaks in January. 

To be honest I don’t think the Patriots are the 3rd best team in the NFL right now. But I do think as this young defense gets more and more experience and continues to improve, they could be near the top by the end of the season. Then it’s just a matter of getting into the playoffs and making some noise.

Glad that we do get a shot a the #1 Jets and #2 Steelers though…

The Cold, Hard Football Facts: The “Old School” Patriots started 12 players Sunday that had never been regular starters in the NFL before this season. That’s usually top-five-pick-in-the-draft stuff, not beat-the-Ravens stuff.

Before the season I truly thought the Chargers would be undefeated headed into this game with the Patriots. How could you not? At Chiefs, Jaguars, at Seahawks, Cardinals, at Raiders, at Rams…

So when you hear about how the Chargers are first in offense and defense it kinda makes sense that they should be. Granted the Chiefs are pretty good, but that game was in a monsoon. The Cardinals are the only team left in their opponents that have seen the playoffs recently and they’re a completely different team now.

So while I don’t doubt the Chargers are a good offensive passing team, I think their defense is getting a lot of help statistically by having faced really six bad offenses. I have a feeling this one is going to be back and forth.
