Kirwan Mock Draft Version 3.0: Board doesn’t fall Patriots way

Kirwan Mock Draft Version 3.0: Board doesn’t fall Patriots way

This latest Pat Kirwan mock is pretty much the nightmare scenario from my Patriots perspective. Watt, Jordan, Quinn, Castonzo and Aldon are all gonezo by 17, leaving Kirwan to pick up Tyron Smith for the Pats.

I think Tyron is a solid pick at that spot for the Pats, but if the board fell this way I think it could be more likely that the Pats trade down to the early 20s, especially if they don’t see any of the available offensive linemen stepping in and starting.

The other picks:

  • 28: Muhammad Wilkerson
  • 33: Justin Houston
  • 60: Quinton Carter

You can’t argue that these four picks definitely hit areas of need for the Patriots, which is exactly why I’m not so high on these picks. None of them seem like outstanding value at any of the spots.

The latest NEPatriotsDraft.com mock draft had the Patriots taking:

  • 17: Wilkerson
  • 28: Costonzo
  • 33: Allen Bailey (DL)
  • 60: Clint Boling (G/C)

I find this draft a little more palatable as it add four big tough trench players. A haul like this would really set the Patriots up well for the next decade.

It’s looking like Drew Bledsoe should be the next inductee in to the Patriots Hall. Really, there’s no other choice. I saw many Patriots games before Drew came to Foxboro; it was a long gap between Steve Grogan and Bledsoe. The combination of him and Parcells certainly set the stage for the current run of dominance.

Tedy Bruschi on what it takes to play OLB in the 3-4. It’s important to note that the Patriots are one of the few teams that expects both OLBs to be able to to flip flop and play either side.

Some 3-4s like the Ravens or Steelers will keep their respective OLBs on one side, and usually that means they can afford to cheat a little bit in terms of having more of a pass rusher on one side, more of a stout guy on the other side.

The Patriots are a match-up based defense so being versatile and comfortable playing on either side is an important characteristic for any tweener they might consider.  In 2010, rookie Jermaine Cunningham saw time at both starting spots in the 3-4 defense but also as a DPR (designated pass rusher).

(no title)

I think the biggest thing Bill Belichick has to consider is whether he’s willing to use a late first-round pick on a pass-rusher who might project to play only on third down. Ideally, a team wants its first-rounder to be able to play all three (or even four) downs, but I think those standards can […]
