Patchung! gets thumb surgery

Mike Reiss just reported that Patrick Chung had thumb surgery this week after injuring it against the Chargers. So. Not. Sweet. Everyone knows he’s pretty much my favorite Pat, and if anyone can tough it out and play post thumb surgery it’s gotta be Chung (let’s remember he came back in the game after injuring it). I guess all we can do is pray, because we certainly need him back there for a variety of reasons.

But still… enough with the injuries this season okay, Football Gods?

I usually try to post some good Patriots opponent videos but this is about as good as I can make it for my Bills fan brethren.

In fairness, the first thing I looked for was a Kyle Williams NFLN Top 100 video, but yeah, that doesn’t exist.

Why didn’t San Diego blitz more? They gave Tom way too much time. I like winning but everyone knows you blitz Brady! — @superbuffundo

It’s a matter of picking your poison when you play Tom Brady and the Patriots. As it is with any great quarterback, do you blitz or not blitz?

We agree, the best approach is to blitz Brady. You need to move him off his spot; you can’t allow him to get comfortable and scan the field.

San Diego decided to blitz Brady 11 times out of his 42 passes in Week 2. How did those 11 plays pan out for the Chargers? Brady went 8-of-11 passing with 152 yards and a touchdown.

Patriots put Koppen, Pryor on IR

As if the injury to Hernando wasn’t enough the buzz kill just got worse with both Dan Koppen and Myron Pryor having their 2011 seasons ended on IR.

There was some optimism last week that Koppen might return but it looks like the ankle was worse than anyone initially thought. Dan Connolly is a decent replacement, in comparison to the undrafted rookie the Jets have filling in for Nick Mangold the Pats look a lot better off. Still Mangold will return, Koppen will not.

Myron Pryor is such a tease. He showed great flash as an interior rusher in the Miami opener, and now he’s done with a shoulder injury. Without him or Mike Wright things are looking a lot like last year for the interior pass rush. Landon Cohen has been brought back to fill in as he did in 2010. As we said all off-season missing Wright and Pryor was an extremely underrated cause of the pass rush problems, and now we’re dealing with the exact same thing again. Hopefully Wright can return, but after another concussion I’m not holding my breath that he’ll be out there any time soon.

These are both significant losses for the Patriots to overcome, but as they say, next man up do your job.
