One theme that was echoed by many head coaches and personnel executives over the past few days at the NFL combine is how football has changed in recent years. More passing means the game is being played more in space on defense. Some teams are in their sub defense, with five or six defensive backs on the field, almost 70 percent of the time. This places an added premium on athletes up front who can help disrupt the opposing offense through pressure.

“I talked to someone well connected in the league who said that the Patriots o-line is the most cohesive and best-coached unit in the NFL. And now that you just said that, it would make perfect sense, in that Mankins is playing with a different guy on his right throughout the season, that will have a meaningful impact on both his play and the lines play. “I don’t think Mankins makes a lot of mental mistakes. Overall, it is always impressive to see some of the biggest players in the draft display their athleticism. Memphis’ Dontari Poe, who measured 6-foot-4 and weighed in at 346 pounds, probably helped his stock more than anyone. He ran a 4.98 time in the 40. Poe is the type of athletic, big-bodied prospect that I would imagine the Patriots would be interested in, but after his performance today, it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s selected before the Patriots are on the clock at 27.

Barring a late change, look for running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis to make it to the open market on March 13, with the possibility of his return to New England remaining open. It appears the Patriots have set a value on Green-Ellis, and it’s not at a level that has Green-Ellis ready to sign before seeing what interest he might generate on the open market.

Well, we have it on good authority, if things don’t work out with the Colts, which is the most likely scenario, the Patriots are definitely on the radar of the five-time Pro Bowl player. In fact, Peyton Manning’s landing spot notwithstanding, the Pats could be at or near the top of Wayne’s list.
