new england patriots

March 24, 2012 by Mike Dussault

The three-year deal recently signed by Bengals running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis has a base value, according to a league source, of $9 million. Making it worth $3 million per year. And matching the annual average of the contracts signed last year by Panthers kicker Olindo Mare and Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell. It doesn’t make it a bad deal for GreenEllis. It’s arguably the best deal of any of the veteran running back contracts signed since free agency opened. He’ll get $4 million in the first year, he can make another $1.6 million via mostly reasonable triggers, and (unlike Michael Bush and his $3.5 million annual average) GreenEllis won’t be backing up Matt Forte.

Ochocinco will be back in New England next year,” Schefter says. “They believe that he’ll spend this offseason immersing himself in the playbook, familiarizing himself with the Patriots’ offense. They’re going to bring all these wide receivers in and let them compete in training camp and the best receivers will play.

I’ve been saying for a while now as long as the cap hit is justifiable why not give Ocho a chance to compete in camp? You’re not getting anything in a trade for him, and you’ll still be taking a cap hit if you cut him. If he comes into camp and still plays tentative you cut him then, but it’s undeniable that Chad has talent and it’s not out of the question that as he gets comfortable his performance and production make a major jump.

“At that time of my career, I was still learning,” Stallworth said. “I actually thought I knew what it meant to be the best, but once I left there is when I really understood how to take care of your body and how to eat right -– just the way they prepare in the Patriots organization. “I was in my [sixth] year that season, but I was one of the younger guys. That’s pretty rare in this league. You don’t get that much. Usually the sixth-year guys are one of your top veterans, so I was able to learn and just watch all those guys and learn from them. That was huge for me.”

Now, with the addition of Lloyd, perhaps the 32-year-old Branch could settle in to the type of role that the Patriots probably envisioned when Ochocinco came aboard – as a 2b/3a type of receiver option. Given his rapport with Tom Brady, and his knowledge of the offense, Branch still has value to the Patriots. Meanwhile, part of the reason the Patriots were in the market for Lloyd was to have an outside presence who could pick up chunk yardage. That’s not necessarily Branch’s game. So if everyone is healthy, and Wes Welker is under contract, Branch looks like he could become more of a complementary weapon than the front-liner he was in 2011.

10 Free Agents in Patriots Wheelhouse

The Patriots are never interested in winning the offseason. During free agency they’re interested in rounding out their team so that they have no glaring needs heading into the draft. Not to say there won’t be needs still, but by mid-April the Patriots should have a 53-man roster that they could roll out there and […]
