matthew slater

I’ve gotten a few chances to visit with Revis, obviously competing against him over the years,” Slater said this afternoon. “I got a chance to meet him and spend some time with him in Hawaii (at the Pro Bowl) this year. Really a good guy, does everything the right way, plays the game the right way, and you respect that about a guy, no matter who he plays for. If he plays the game hard, plays the game the right way, you respect it, and he’s definitely one of those guys.

Why is Matthew Slater a Pro Bowl special teamer? His tackle on punt returner Jacoby Jones (8:21 remaining) is one example. Slater worked away from a double-team at the line of scrimmage (Chykie Brown/Jeromy Miles) and outran everyone up the middle of the field, located the ball, took a perfect angle and broke down perfectly from a full-sprint to bring down Jones after just 2 yards – fighting through a stiff-arm. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Slater is following the likes of former teammate Kevin Faulk and current teammate Shane Vereen, who according to coach Bill Belichick have also handled the kickoff return’s version of a hall monitor. With the location of the kickoff being moved up from the 30 to the 35-yard-line prior to the 2011 season, it’s become an important role, because kicks are traveling deeper into the end zone, and the players running downfield on kickoff coverage trying to smash the returner are starting 5 yards closer.

The Value of a Special Teamer: Matthew Slater’s Unsung Impact on Patriots | NEPatriotsDraft.com – 2014 NFL Draft

Great stuff breaking down a player who doesn’t get enough love around here, but is the consummate Patriot and another player who left everyone scratching their head when Bill drafted him. He should get more credit for taking a player who didn’t even have a position in college and developing him into a team captain and Pro Bowl special teamer. Hope Slater is back soon, though I also hope I never see him return another kick in his career. He was too fond of the “head down, run really fast into tackler” style of kick returns.

Matthew Slater is the latest injury the Patriots will be forced to deal with. The special teams captain is dealing with a hand or wrist injury, depending on who you believe, and his status for Sunday’s game is in question. The popular Slater apparently suffered the injury in Thursday’s win over the Jets — if he’s not able to go Sunday against the Bucs, it will be interesting to see who will be asked to take over his role as leader of the New England special teams unit.

Slater is the 11th player to receive the award, and watching him accept the honor served as a reminder of one of the neat parts about reporting on the same team for an extended period of time: The chance to see a player evolve from on-the-roster-bubble rookie to captain and respected leader.

Alexander and Slater tied for the league lead with 16 Return Stops last year, and in a surprising example of the Pro Bowl getting something completely right, the two players were chosen as the Pro-Bowl special-teamers for the NFC and AFC. Slater was particularly impressive with a Return Stop on all 16 of his tackles.

Matthew Slater getting some love. When everyone talks about the Patriots draft history, rarely do you hear about Slater, a player without a true college position that the Pats took in the fifth round of the 2008 draft.
