Patriots Football Outsiders DVOA Update (going back to 2001)

Usually I wait until the fourth game of the season to post any long-term stat perspective but since the bye week comes early this year I’m putting this up now. Remember these numbers are reflective of how three games unfolded and each’s specific gameplan. So the ugly run defense numbers aren’t really quite as horrible as they look.

But clearly the offense picked up almost exactly where they left off last year and gasp, the pass defense has been top-10 so far. Yes against Tyrod Taylor and Blake Bortles but there was a time not so long ago when EVERYONE threw for 300 yards on the Pats.

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Week 15 DVOA Ratings

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Week 15 DVOA Ratings

Pats hit #1 in weighted DVOA, but due to their 2-2 start they’re still behind the Broncos overall.

The other rankings:

Offense: 4th (4th pass, 18th rush)
Defense: 9th (11th pass, 18th rush)
Special Teams: 5th

Tight ends remain their biggest weakness in the passing game, they’re 29th overall against them in DVOA.

Football Outsiders Week 14 DVOA Rankings

The Patriots ascension continues, but they haven’t caught the Broncos yet. But put in historical context as I’ve done above and it confirms what I’ve been writing this week – that this is the best Patriots defense since 2007. In fact, this defense is even better than the 2007 defense and closer to the three best years 2003, 2004 and 2006.

Offensively the dip in the running attack is notable, but it’s also notable that the running attack was even worse in 2003 and we know how that season finished.

Four of the Patriots’ next five games come against teams ranked seventh or higher in DVOA pass offense, starting of course with the No. 1 Denver Broncos. And yet, it could be worse for the Pats. Their tough remaining schedule (the second hardest, trailing only Oakland) is almost matched by tough remaining schedules for the two teams fighting them for the AFC East title: Buffalo (fourth in remaining schedule) and Miami (sixth in remaining schedule).

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Week 2 DVOA Ratings

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Week 2 DVOA Ratings

Patriots up to 9th overall from 20th last week. Offense at 24, defense at 4th, special teams at 8th. Still won’t put much emphasis on these numbers until the quarter pole.

Perhaps slightly more exciting is the Patriots currently boast the best pass defense DVOA in the NFL. Of course we all know who they’ve faced and how skewed these numbers are at this point, but nice to look at nonetheless.

We’ll see what happens down the road though, after this weekend there are nothing even close to easy games the rest of the way.

It Is What It Is » Who’s Next: Ten looming contractual questions for Patriots Nice round-up here from Chris Price, and it already looks like the Pats will have some tough choices. Talib has been stellar so far and it’s frustrating to imagine the Pats lowballing him and letting him walk just as the defense […]
