duron harmon

March 2, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Although a bit bigger in body type at 6-foot, 205 pounds and some room to grow, Harmon offers a bit more range than Gregory (5-11, 200), with a few examples of this showing up in the fourth quarter of the Dec. 22 game against the Ravens when he broke out to the sideline to create disruption on incomplete deep passes to receivers Torrey Smith (7:03 remaining) and Marlon Brown (6:52 remaining). Similar to most young players, the biggest issue for Harmon was consistency over his extended defensive snaps (36.9 percent), as there were times when his overall play/tackling dipped (e.g. vs. Houston, Dec. 2).

New England Patriots rookie review: S Duron Harmon | masslive.com

I really like what I saw out of Harmon last season. He has good instincts that will only continue to improve with experience and we saw a burst on the ball that the Pats have lacked in recent seasons. He also has long arms and has sound tackling technique.

The issue as I see it is that he’s probably a best fit in more of a free safety role as opposed to being in the box. The same might be said for Steve Gregory, but I think if you swap Gregory for a little more size and keep McCourty and Harmon as your back-end guys in three safety groupings, that’s a good core.

He came back in training camp and understood the defense already,” said McCourty, a fellow Rutgers product. “That’s hard as a rookie when you didn’t get any reps or do a lot, for him to just step in and as soon as he got in he was making calls. I think that shows him being able to get mental reps while not even practicing.

Now that the Ed Reed “sweepstakes” is over the focus turns to Duron Harmon and here’s a good piece from Oliver Thomas. Still hope Steve Gregory is back next week against the Broncos, though that might be wishful thinking. The Broncos veteran passing offense would attack Harmon with purpose.

From Oliver Thomas:

Harmon’s performance against Pittsburgh left an encouraging impression. The third-round choice didn’t look out of place next to free safety Devin McCourty. He looked patient, letting the play stay in front of him. From there, he was able make judicious decisions based on what he diagnosed. Now the newcomer was not perfect; there were instances of hesitation when it came to delegating multiple receivers, and there were overreactions when it came to sensing the run. But on second glance, Harmon did not appear to make the definitive mistakes you expect to see from a young defensive back thrust into the lineup.

He’s been a guy who’s been a workhorse, coming in and studying, preparing really hard,” McCourty said. “I think the best thing about it as you’ve seen is when he’s gotten opportunities he’s made plays. He just has to continue to work hard and do what he’s been doing.

Hoping Gregory is back for the Broncos, because if he’s not there’s going to be a big target on Harmon’s back.

It helps a lot,” Harmon said about being eased into the defense in the dime role. “It’s just the idea that you get to go out there and see different things and you get to learn from them. And that’s the main thing about experience. It’s just being able to learn from certain things that you do: certain plays, certain coverages. It’s just all about learning. And that’s exactly what I was able to do playing in the dime package.
