defense

October 20, 2013 by Mike Dussault

We went through each game and tallied up the blitz totals — with a huge assist from ProFootballFocus.com — and found that yes, indeed, the Patriots aren’t blitzing a whole lot this year. They are blitzing on 22.2 percent of passing plays, ranked 26th in the NFL. The league average is 31.3 percent. But the Patriots are 13th in pass defense and third in points allowed, so the tactic is working well.

NFL trade deadline fast approaching – Sports – The Boston Globe

The Patriots are always a conservative defense, and if they’re blitzing a lot, it means they’re trying to cover up a weakness. In a perfect world you can get pressure with your front four and never have to blitz. Sorry to those looking for an “attacking” defense that is sending defensive backs all the time.

When you look at their schedule — and again, I think that the Jets are an absolute total wild card — but when you look at the Patriots’ schedule coming up, you certainly think that if you have to miss Talib, you’re probably missing him at the right time,” King said. “Because you figure that you can put some pressure on young quarterbacks like Geno Smith and like Ryan Tannehill next week, and quarterbacks that really have been inconsistent. … “And I guess when I look at the Patriots right now, especially on defense, I think what has really helped them tremendously is that they’re getting pressure up front. … I think they’re playing so well in getting pressure compared to maybe past years that I wouldn’t worry about it as much. I worry about it against [Ben] Roethlisberger, but I wouldn’t really worry about it in the next couple of weeks as much as I would worry about it against [Drew] Brees, Roethlisbeger and those guys.”

Personally I think it’s just been better coverage, especially the physicality at the line. The pressure has been inconsistent, and MMQB’s rankings have the Pats at 25th in the NFL. That just might be the best pass rush metric out there.

That’s what we’re here for every day,” Belichick said Wednesday when asked about the importance of depth and the process of building it. “Everybody that’s here – the players on the active roster, the players on the practice squad, even players in training camp that aren’t here – they’ve all been coached, they’ve worked, they’ve prepared and some of them get a chance to play, some of them don’t and then over the course of the year, sometimes that changes. Everybody here is working on a daily basis trying to get better. "Who knows exactly how the wheel is going to spin, who is going to be where, but we all have to prepare for that.

The Patriots’ cornerbacks have been a pleasant surprise this season thanks to Boyer’s coaching. The second-year coach has them playing at a high level, shutting down poor offenses and slowing down potent offenses. He won’t get any credit — that’ll go to his head coach Bill Belichick — but that’s expected. His name only gets called when his cornerbacks, and Patriots fans, are panicking.

For years opposing offenses were able to circle the Patriots on their schedule and know that they could log big numbers against the secondary. That’s no longer true, and New England has Talib to thank for that. His standing as a shutdown cornerback is no longer up for debate. First he took down Tampa Bay’s Vincent Jackson, then Atlanta’s Julio Jones, and finally Cincinnati’s A.J. Green. All three were impressive feats, but the way he erased Jimmy Graham from Sunday’s 30-27 win may be his most impressive performance to date.

But it was the defense, holding Brees and Co. to a total of 1 net yard on six snaps with a chance to put the game away that deserves a big chunk of the credit. Five runs, one pass and it totaled just a single net yard. That’s impressive work with or without all the injuries the unit was dealing with and it’s what the Patriots needed to get the ball back to Brady to give the Future Hall of Famer another chance to add to his legend.
