Brandon Bolden gets started on Patriots’ win over Bucs – Sports – The Boston Globe

I’ve been a Brandon Bolden fan for a while now and I was excited to see him come through after getting on the field for the first time this season. Always liked how he ran and with 100 yards of offense, I think we’ll be seeing even more of him.

You can go search for money and all that stuff, but if you’re losing every week, you’d be pretty miserable. I want to be here, I want to win and I want to help the team and just continue to be a good football player and be reliable.

Well I think – the expectation is for us is to get better and improve and the guys that we have are the guys that we practiced with and played with the first three weeks,” he replied. “I mean look, we’ve – no one thought Gronk would be out at this point, no one thought what happened with [Aaron] Hernandez would’ve happened, no one thought Danny [Amendola] would be down, no one thought Shane [Vereen] would be out. I mean, we’ve got – there’s kind of an unusual set of circumstances but that’s where we’re at and we’re 3-0.

They mustered a pedestrian 358 total yards against the Buccaneers, and through three games are only averaging 19.7 points per game, down from 34.8 last year. The Patriots managed only two touchdowns in five trips inside the red zone, and Brady’s longest completion of the day was just 20 yards. He’s had to dink and dunk all season with his top receiver threats taken away. Through three games, Brady is averaging just 5.5 yards per attempt — a full 2 yards below his career average of 7.5.

Most weeks, the Patriots will be in their nickel defense (five defensive backs) against the three-receiver package, which lightens the box against the run but adds help in the passing game. On Sunday, the Patriots switched things up by subbing out Gregory at safety for a third cornerback (Alfonzo Dennard), while keeping their front seven intact.

After struggling to get on the same page for the first two weeks, Brady and the rookies took a step in the right direction in Sunday’s 23-3 win. Dobson and Thompkins combined for 10 catches, 93 yards and two touchdowns on 17 targets. This after completing passes on 9 of 21 targets between the two in the first two games.
